Ashleigh Barty remains the heavy favorite to take the title. But she’s facing a player who’s won Wimbledon in doubles, was a finalist in Bad Homburg two weeks ago on grass and is in her third career trip to the third round of Wimbledon.

Coco Gauff vs Kaja Juvan Prediction

Ranked No. 102, 20-year-old Kaja Juvan would seem like fairly easy pickings for Coco Gauff, who is still just 17.

They first met when Gauff, the junior French Open champion at 14, got a wild card into the women’s qualifying the following year. The 18-year-old Juvan took her in straight sets.

But earlier this year in the qualifying in Adelaide Gauff barely scraped through, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Juvan was slowed earlier this year by a COVID diagnosis during a tournament in Monterrey, Mexico.

She’s solid, even if her best surface is clay. Two years ago during the last Wimbledon, she qualified and reached the second round – and took Serena Williams to three sets before bowing out.

Gauff’s opponents so far in her Wimbledon career have been women in their late 20s and 30s, abashed by the possibility of potentially losing to someone so young Another win came in the first round this year, against British wild card Francesca Jones. At 7-5, 6-4, it was closer than most expected.

In Juvan, she gets a young player who won’t be bothered by her age, and one who knows she can compete with her. But Gauff is too good.

Best Bet: Under 21.5 games (-129)

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Karolina Muchova Prediction

This matchup is by far the closest, rankings wise.

French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is at No. 19; Karolina Muchova is at No. 22.

If Muchova, with her beautiful slice and eagerness to come to the net, has the better grass-court skill set, Pavlyuchenkova has significantly more experience

She’s also, at age 29, playing her … 14th Wimbledon. And she does have a quarterfinal effort on her resumé.

Muchova was a quarterfinalist at the most recent Wimbledon – in her main-draw debut. The previous year, she lost in the second round of qualifying to former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.

She had the tougher second round this year than Pavlyuchenkova did, as she blunted the power and shotmaking ability of the Italian Camila Giorgi in three close sets.

It’s a tough one to predict, for all those reasons.  But the players with a lot of variety – Ons Jabeur comes to mind – seem to be having extra-good success at this year’s Wimbledon.

Best Bet: Muchova in three sets (+330)

Angelique Kerber vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich Prediction

The former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber’s form during the first week this year stands in sharp contrast to her rather world-weary effort during the season leading up to it.

And after 15 years of grinding out there, at 33, she seems over it.

But she looked positively energized after her 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Sara Sorribes Tormo (better known for her clay prowess). And the follow-up to that will go one of two ways.

Either she’ll revert to the mean, thinking about the teenager Gauff as a potential fourth-round opponent. Or she’ll build on it, especially given the fact that she won’t have to face Serena Williams.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who was the sad beneficiary of Williams’ first-round injury retirement, enjoyed her best career Grand Slam effort at Wimbledon in 2018 (her best season so far). She reached the fourth round.

It should be very competitive. And Kerber’s cluttered mind might get trumped by Sasnovich’s sense that all of this is a bonus, and she’s a massive underdog. It’s a worthy chance to take.
