Of the 16 seeded players who should have reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon women’s singles based on ranking, only five remain.

Pre-tournament favorite Ashleigh Barty, the No. 1 seed, plays reigning French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, the No. 14 seed, in the only match that went according to form.

Odds as of July 4

Coco Gauff vs Angelique Kerber

Generally speaking, veteran players who have faced Coco Gauff at Wimbledon have struggled somewhat with the spectre of losing to someone so young.

But in Kerber’s case (she’s 33; Gauff is 17), just reaching the second week of the Championships given her indifferent form in 2021 already has taken the pressure off.

She is the only former champ remaining in the women’s draw.

The pressure is on Gauff, who made it to Manic Monday in her highly-publicized Wimbledon debut in 2019 (she lost to Simona Halep in straight sets) and to the quarterfinals at the French Open last month.

Gauff has only played five WTA-level matches against lefthanders. Four have come in the last five months. Randomly, three were against Swiss lefty Jill Teichmann.

She’s a rather pedestrian 3-2, and two of those wins have been struggles.

Coco Gauff vs Lefthanders

Opponent Tournament Result

None of those lefties come close to the quality of Kerber when she’s on.

The German lefty will play voracious defence and force Gauff into going for more than she would like. And she’ll put a lot of pressure on Gauff’s intermittently shaky second serve.

Best Bet: Kerber in three sets (+380)

Emma Raducanu vs Ajla Tomljanovic

One can only imagine what lies ahead for 18-year-old Emma Raducanu.

She will suffer the attentions of the tabloid press in a way a British tennis player has not experienced in a long time.

But for now, it’s all “a blast”, as she puts it.

The world No. 338 hadn’t played a single tournament from the start of the pandemic shutdown in March, 2020 – until she reappeared on the grass last month and made her WTA debut.

So what she has accomplished is already impressive.

Raducanu showed few nerves in defeating the in-form Sorana Cirstea in straight sets on Saturday, on the iconic No. 1 Court. She gets that court assignment on Manic Monday .

And in Tomljanovic, she faces a 28-year-old who had gone past the second round only once in 23 previous Grand Slam appearances – and never at Wimbledon.

Tomljanovic has already had her share of drama, in defeating Jelena Ostapenko in the third round on Saturday.

A big server and strong hitter, she has developed a reputation for putting herself in position to win big matches, only to fail to close them out.

And the Aussie will also have to deal with a crowd that, with the exception of perhaps her family, will be roaring for her opponent.

Best Bet: Radacanu (+104)

Karolina Pliskova vs Liudmila Samsonova

Samsonova, 22 and ranked No. 106, received a last-minute wild card into the main draw after going from the qualifying to the title at the grass-court tournament in Berlin, just before Wimbledon.

She needed three sets to get past Americans Jessica Pegula (the No. 22 seed) and Sloane Stephens, a former Grand Slam champion.

Conversely, Pliskova hasn’t lost a set. And even if the former No. 1’s best results at Wimbledon have been the singles round of 16 the last two editions, she has other great grass results – especially at the tuneup event in Eastbourne.

Like Kerber, Pliskova has had an indifferent 2021. But she can serve Samsonova off the court on a good day.

There’s no real favorite in this match, with Pliskova at -108 and Samsonova at -120. And it should play out that way.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+125)
