The San Francisco 49ers (4-11) will head to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to take on the Los Angeles Rams (12-3) in Week 17 (December 30, 2018 at 4:25pm EST). The Rams opened as 10.0-point favorites.
The 49ers are averaging only 20.7 points per game (23rd). But they could easily remedy this if they’d just stop committing so many turnovers. San Francisco has committed 28 turnovers this season (30th), which includes one last week against the Bears.
Misguided Nick Mullens passes have been the root of seven of those giveaways in as many starts. Reducing the turnovers needs to be the main focus for Mullens and the 49ers the rest of the season.
It’s quite easy to see why San Francisco is struggling this season: not only do they have issues scoring points, but they cannot stop others from scoring. The 49ers surrender 25.8 points per game, which ranks 24th in the league.
They’ll need one of these units to show up to get the win in Week 17.
San Francisco’s defense will certainly be tested this week against a Los Angeles offense that is scoring points at will.
The Rams are averaging 31.9 points per game (third) thanks to their ability to beat you both on the ground and through the air. They rank fourth in passing (285.7 yards per game) and third in rushing (138.4 yards per game).
Jared Goff has been great for Los Angeles this season, throwing for 4,489 yards with a 28:12 TD to INT ratio. He’s not only received great production from his pass-catchers, particularly Robert Woods (1,195 receiving yards), but has also been able to depend on Todd Gurley to carry the load when necessary. Gurley has tallied 1,251 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns this season, making the Rams’ offense nearly impossible to stop.
Defensively, the Rams are a pretty average unit. They allow 23.5 points per game, which ranks 17th in the league.
They’ve been weak against the run, giving up 122 yards per game on the ground (22nd). They’ve at least been average defending the pass, though. Los Angeles is surrendering 234.4 passing yards per game (13th).
The last time these two teams met was October 21st, 2018, when Los Angeles crushed the 49ers 39-10. The Rams were also 8.0-point favorites in that game.
