2020 Bundesliga Trophy Top Contenders

Here are some more notes on major line moves throughout the year:

  • [June 15] Bayern are now one win away from claiming the title and are -100000 odds to do so
  • [May 28] After Bayern’s 1-0 win over Dortmund in Der Klassiker this week, they’ve now stretched their lead to seven points in the title race, which they’ve now essentially wrapped up
  • [May 6] It’s been nearly two months since the Bundesliga was shut down due to the coronavirus on March 11. Today, the German government has announced their approval for the league to return this month. Upon a decision by the league, the Bundesliga is set to return on either May 15th or 22nd. Bayern Munich, currently with a four-point lead over second place Borussia Dortmund are big favorites to win the league upon its return with average odds of -533.
  • [Mar 4] Ahead of Matchday 25 and just three points back of first place Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig have seen their odds dip from an average of +413 to +575
  • [Feb 4] After sinking as low as +1386 in December, Dortmund have been strong to start the new year and are now three points off first place and shortened to +438
  • [Dec 30] BVB made a big splash this weekend in signing Erling Braut Haaland but their odds to win the title are still +1386, while they were +850 earlier this month
  • [Dec 9] After a 2-1 win over title holders Bayern, Gladbach are now as short as an average of +1100 to win the title in 2020
  • [Dec 3] Leipzig, the league’s highest scorers, are one point out of first place and are now 5-1 odds to win the title. While Dortmund, five points back of the lead have seen their odds plummet to 8-1
  • [Nov 4] After losing 5-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich’s odds are how the worst they’ve been all season to win the title at -248
  • [Oct 2] Having moved out to a one-point lead over RBL on top of the Bundesliga table, Bayern Munich’s odds continue to shorten from -400 to -488. While Borussia Dortmund, considered to be the strongest contender for Bayern, are three points back and have seen their odds drop from +406 to +525
  • [Aug 12] The biggest movement since last month has seen outsiders Borussia Monchengladbach’s odds shorten from an average of +9875 to +9167
  • [July 15] While still big outsiders, Wolfsburg’s average odds have shortened from +30000 to +11750 since last month
  • [June 3] Odds have shortened slightly on the Bavarian giants now to an average of -375
  • [May 27] Bayern Munich have opened as commanding -400 favorites to win their eighth-straight Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich have now won the Bundesliga title for an incredible seven-straight years. Runners-up Borussia Dortmund are the only other team to win a title this past decade. Dortmund won in back-to-back years in 2011 and 2012.

Prior to this past decade, a couple of other teams managed to lift the trophy when VfL Wolfsburg did so in 2009 and VfB Stuttgart won in 2007.

Bayern Munich won their first trophy in 1969 and currently have 29 titles to their name, while finishing runners-up, also a record ten times.

Most Bundesliga Titles

While Dortmund have been the second-most successful Bundesliga side of late as champions or runners-up in six of the past nine years, it is FC Nürnberg, with nine titles, who are the next most-winningest team with nine titles. The west German team finished last in the league in 2019 and will be playing in the 2. Bundesliga this season.

Dortmund have lifted the domestic trophy on eight occasions overall while finishing second another eight times.
