UPDATE (AUGUST 25, 2018): OG was the last team standing at The International 2018 after a resounding, and thoroughly unexpected, victory against PSG.LGD. The European squad, which was thrown together just three months beforehand, walked away with a tidy $11.2 million in winnings.  The $25.4 million purse raised for the event was the largest ever in competitive video gaming.

The International: Dota 2 Championships will take place in Canada for the first time ever this year, as the world’s top Dota teams go head-to-head at Rogers Arena in Vancouver from August 20-25.

Russian juggernaut Vitrus.pro became the first team to qualify in March following a series of tournament victories. They have since been joined by perennial contenders Team Liquid, Team Secret, PSG.LGD, Mineski, Vici Gaming, and 2014 winners Newbee. The tournament will be rounded out soon with one more direct invitation and eight regional qualifiers.

The 2018 prize pool has already surpassed $23 million and is expected to reach $24 million by the time the event is held. That’s a whole lotta money and it should result in some unforgettable drama.

The International: Dota 2 Championship Odds

Bookmakers are bullish on Vitrus Pro. The Russian eSports team’s average odds to win The International are +280 across a number of top online betting sites. The squad has a pair of impressive victories on its resume from ESL One Hamburg 2017 and ESL One Birmingham 2018 and appear to be peaking at just the right time.

Team Liquid remains the team to beat after a thrilling first two days of The International 2018 in Vancouver.

How much does experience count for at The International? Not much, apparently. Natus Vincere, Alliance, Newbee, and Evil Geniuses all opened with distant odds to win this year’s event despite their excellent track records.

The International: Dota 2 Prize Pools

Team Liquid has entered The International with extremely short opening odds over the last three years. Their implied probability to win the event in 2018 is 23.26%.

The International: Dota 2 Past Winners

Year Winner Country
2017 Team Liquid Europe
2016 Wings Gaming China
2015 Evil Geniuses United States
2014 Newbee China
2013 Alliance Sweden
2012 Invictus Gaming China
2011 Natus Vincere Ukraine

Team Liquid will be trying to become the first back-to-back winner of The International when it converges on Vancouver this year. The team’s diverse roster features Kuro Salehi Takhasomi, Lasse Urpalainen, Ivan Borislavov, Amer Al-Barkawi, and Maroun Merhej.

The International: Dota 2 Winners by Country

No country has dominated The International quite like China, who have gotten big-time victories from Invictus Gaming, Newbee, and Wings Gaming. The world will be watching to see if Chinese super teams PSG.LGD, Vici Gaming, or Newbee can pull out another big win in 2018.

Only one team can win The International: Dota 2 each year, but there’s still plenty of glory in coming in second or third in such a talented field. Natus Vincere and Evil Geniuses lead all teams with three top-three finishes a piece, and LGD Gaming and Newbee aren’t far behind with a pair of top-three finishes of their own.
