What’s Next for Kaepernick? Odds on 2017 Season

Colin Kaepernick is finally generating some interest from NFL teams. Sorry, make that team.

The Seattle Seahawks — Kaep’s old nemesis — brought him in for a visit this week. They’re obviously set at starter with Russell Wilson holding the fort, but Trevone Boykin is an untested backup and Wilson now has an injury history.

Kaepernick offers some of the same traits as Wilson and could slot nicely into the backup role. His mobility and scrambling ability would allow Darrell Bevell to use mostly the same playbook if Wilson went down.

Whether those same plays would be nearly as productive is another question entirely. But Kaepernick wouldn’t require implementing a whole new offense the way, say, a sluggish veteran like Nick Foles would.

Over/Under on total value of Kaepernick’s 2017 contract: $2.5 million

That’s more than Mark Sanchez but less than Ryan Fitzpatrick. That’s about right for Kaepernick these days.

Kaepernick doesn’t want to be a back-up. He wants to start and make starter money. Locking himself up for two years or more is not a good idea, financially.

Over/Under starts for Kaepernick in 2017: 0.5

As mentioned, Wilson has injury concerns these days. He battled various lower-body ailments last year, and he’s going to be under intense pressure again this season unless — by some miracle — Seattle’s o-line makes marked improvements.

That said, Wilson is an absolute gladiator when it comes to playing through pain. Kaep could get a start late in the year if Seattle has sewn up the NFC West. Stepping in for an injured Wilson will require a serious injury to the Seattle starter.
