What are MLB Player Prop Bets?
MLB player prop bets are centered around performances of specific players. How many hits they’ll have, will they hit a home run, how many strikeouts they’ll record, etc.
Top-rated sports betting apps are offering extensive MLB player prop markets, giving bettors several options to bet on outside the result of the game itself, or to build the perfect same-game parlay.
Most player props you will see are over/under bets on a specific stat, but some will be more milestone based.
Here’s how that would work:
- Over/Under: Aaron Judge 1.5 Total Bases (Over –145 / Under +105)
- Milestone: Aaron Judge 2+ Total Bases (-145)
As you might imagine, there are A LOT of stats that can be used for MLB player props, and chances are if you’re thinking it, a sportsbook is offering it.
Types of MLB Player Prop Bets
MLB player props can be broken down into two basic categories: Pitcher props and hitter props. Of course, among hitter props are home run prop bets, which deserve their own space, as they are among the most popular baseball bets made during the season.
MLB Pitching Props
MLB player props for pitchers have gone well beyond strikeouts. Here are some of the pitching props you can bet on at MLB betting apps:
- Strikeouts thrown
- Outs recorded
- Hits allowed
- Earned runs allowed
- Walks allowed
Most of those pitcher props come in over/under and milestone formats.
Some sports betting apps will also offer a “speed of first pitch” prop, which is based off the official MPH of a pitcher’s first pitch of the game.
That would like this: Tarik Skubal 97.5 MPH (Over -110/Under -110). If Skubal opened the game for the Detroit Tigers with a 98 MPH fastball, the Over would win. If he threw an off-speed pitch that went 97 MPH or below, the Under would cash.
Batter Props
On the other side, there are several props available for hitters. And those go well beyond HR bets:
- Hits
- Total bases
- RBIs
- Hits + Runs + RBIs
- Runs
- Singles
- Doubles
- Walks
- Stolen bases
- Triples
- Strikeouts
As you can see, you can bet on basically any outcome for a batter in a baseball game.
Over/under bets on these hitter props can vary based on the player and matchup. For instance, Bo Bichette could have a hit line set at 1.5, while a lesser player would be at 0.5.
MLB Home Run Props
The most popular MLB player prop bets at online sportsbooks are home run props.
These are the equivalent of anytime TD props for NFL bettors, as the long ball is the most exciting play in baseball.
Home run bets can be offered in multiple ways, but the basic concept is will a player hit a home run. That’s the same if it says Kyle Schwarber Over 0.5 HR, or 1+ HR.
Some sportsbooks will offer an under on that 0.5, or a yes/no option on HR bets, with heavy juice on “No” and the Under.
You can also find milestone bets for multiple HRs in a game.

Strategies for Betting on MLB Player Props
Now that you know where to find MLB player props, how do you know which MLB picks to make?
I have a list of strategies to consider before making your bets.
Consider Recent Performance
Maybe as much as any other sport, baseball is a game of streaks. Batters have spells where they see the ball incredibly well, or where they’re not seeing it at all.
Pitchers have stretches where they struggle with their control and others where they can’t miss.
Sure, players like Paul Skenes, Cal Raleigh or Jose Ramirez might just always have it. But the majority of players in the league are going to go through ups and downs.
Your job as a bettor is to capitalize on those, and you can easily do research to see how a hitter or pitcher has done of late.
Analyze Pitcher/Hitter Matchups
Baseball is a series of head-to-head matchups between pitchers and hitters, and for many of those matchups, there is a record of how those have gone.
For whatever reason, some hitters just seem to have a pitcher’s number. Or vice versa.
Take Detroit Tigers outfield Kerry Carpenter, for example. He entered the 2025 ALDS 4-of-8 in his career against Seattle Mariners starter George Kirby, with all four hits being home runs. Sure enough, in Game 1 of that series, Carpenter took Kirby deep again with his only hit.
A HR bet would have been lucrative in that case, or a total bases wager.
Research the Stadium’s Analytics
Unlike a football field or basketball court that has clearly defined and consistent standards, MLB parks come in different shapes and sizes.
Some parks, like Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park or Coors Field, have long been known as hitters’ parks. While others, such as Comerica Park and T-Mobile Park, are more pitcher friendly.
Now, a lot of those stats have to do with who is playing in those stadiums, but knowing the park is a great way to predict which props are most favorable.
