What to Look For in an NBA Betting Site

Not all sportsbooks are created equal. We’re here to help you spot the differences between the contenders and the pretenders.

Variety in Lines and Betting Options

When choosing an NBA betting site, you’ll want to find one that offers a wide variety of betting options. The best sportsbooks have competitive odds for every game available and allow you to bet before and during games with a large selection of live betting categories that are updated in real time.

Of course, betting isn’t all about instant gratification. Good sportsbooks also allow you to wager on events that often take an entire season to unfold. These kinds of events are known as “futures,” and they include everything from team wins to player awards to the NBA Championship. Quality sportsbooks update their futures odds regularly and occasionally release one-off bets known as “props” to reflect the latest news and developments from around the Association.

User Interface

A sportsbook can have a wealth of betting options available, but it isn’t of much use if you can’t figure out how to navigate it. The best online sportsbooks have intuitive user interfaces with clean, uncluttered layouts and clearly defined buttons and links. They’re designed to make your NBA betting experience as fast and hassle-free as possible and they never inundate you with superfluous data and annoying pop-ups.

In-Game Betting Options

Good sportsbooks allow you to place bets on NBA games that are already underway. Just like a regular pre-game bet, they permit betting on the moneyline, spread, and total. They also offer new lines at the end of every quarter and halftime.

Mobile Betting

The days of searching out bookies in dimly lit bars are long over. Sportsbook operators understand that you want to place bets whenever and wherever you are and, for the most part, have done a stellar job of creating mobile-friendly sites and apps to allow you to make wagers on the go.

When selecting an NBA betting site, ensure that their site loads and processes quickly on your mobile device and that the information is clearly laid out and easy to access. You’ll also want to make sure that the site’s betting options load simultaneously and that there is no lag as you scroll down.

Single Game NBA Bets

There’s no shortage of ways of betting on NBA games. You can bet the moneyline, the spread, or the game total. We’ve included a brief tutorial below to help you get a feel for each betting option.

Betting the Moneyline

The simplest and most popular NBA bet available is undoubtedly the moneyline. When you bet the moneyline, you’re betting on which team will win the gameThe margin of victory and the combined point total do not matter.

Teams Spread Moneyline Total
San Antonio Spurs -3.5 -230 O 208.5 (-110)
Orlando Magic +3.5 +180 U 208.5 (-120)

When looking at an NBA moneyline, each team will have either a positive number (i.e. +180) or a negative number (i.e -230) beside it. The underdog (the weaker of the two teams) will generally have a positive number next to it, while the favorite (the team expected to win) will generally have a negative number next to it. The bigger the favorite, the smaller the payout. The bigger the underdog, the bigger the payout.

In games that are expected to be close, both teams may have a negative number. In these cases, the team that is closer to zero is the favorite.

Betting on the Spread

When you bet on the spread, you aren’t picking an outright winner or an outright loser. Instead, you’re betting on whether a team can win by a specified number of points. If you bet on the favorite, they have to win by a specified number of points. Conversely, if you’re betting on the underdog, they have to not lose by the specified number of points. When looking at the spread, the favorited team will have a negative number beside it, while the underdog will have a positive number beside it.

Teams Spread Moneyline Total
Golden State Warriors -10.5 -2500 O 229.5 (-115)
Phoenix Suns +10.5 +900 U 229.5 (-115)

Let’s say the spread for a game between the favored Golden State Warriors and the underdog Phoenix Suns is 10.5. In this instance, if you bet on the Warriors, they would have to beat the Suns by at least 11 points to successfully “cover” the spread and make your bet a winner. If you bet on the Suns, they would either have to win the game outright or lose by less than 10 points for you to win your wager.

NBA Totals Betting

Totals betting, as the name suggests, refers to the final point total of both teams combined. For instance, if the Toronto Raptors beat the Boston Celtics 105-100, then the total is 205. Isn’t math fun?

Oddsmakers set a projected point total for every game based upon a number of factors including the strength of each teams’ offenses and defenses, as well as injuries, past performance, and home court advantage. You can bet on the “over” if you think the final score is going to be greater than the projected total, or the “under” if you think it is going to be less than the projected total.

Just like placing a bet against the spread, half-points are typically used to avoid the possibility of a tie.

Other NBA Bets

It’s never been easier to bet on NBA action thanks to the wealth of wagering options available at sportsbooks worldwide. These days, you can bet on player performance, individual awards, transactions, and championship futures. Some sportsbooks even allow you to bet on the outcome of a single play.

NBA Championship Futures Bets

Shortly after the NBA Finals ends, most sportsbooks post odds for which team will win the following year’s championship. The odds are available for all 30 teams and are generally laid out in descending order from the team with the shortest odds to the team with the longest odds. Some sportsbooks also list teams alphabetically to make them easier to search.

Most sportsbooks update their NBA Championship odds throughout the regular season to reflect key injuries, player movement, and winning streaks. When teams perform better, their odds generally get shorter, and when they perform worse, their odds typically get longer.

The key to betting on the NBA Championship futures is to find teams that are being undervalued by oddsmakers and to wager on them when their odds are still long.

We track the odds to win the NBA Championship all season long.

Betting on NBA Playoffs Games

The NBA postseason is where the excitement really happens for fans and bettors alike. Most NBA betting sites allow you to get swept up in the action by wagering on the results of individual playoff games as well as entire series.

NBA Win Totals Bets

Before the start of the NBA season, most sportsbooks release totals for the number of games each team is projected to win. These are known as Win Totals, and they factor in the quality of the team’s roster, its past performance, and its strength of schedule. You can wager on whether a team is likely to go “over” or “under” its win total.

You can generally find win totals for all 30 teams, but you have to act fast as they typically disappear before the first game of the regular season.

NBA Player Prop Bets

With proposition betting or “prop” betting, you can bet on the statistical production of specific players within an NBA game. The number of options varies from site to site, but most sportsbooks allow you to bet on how many points a player will score, how many rebounds he will record, and how many assists he will dish out.

Some sportsbooks also allow you to make head-to-head bets in which you select one player to outperform another for a chosen statistic. For instance, you can bet on whether LeBron James will have more or fewer points than Kyrie Irving when the Los Angeles Lakers play the Boston Celtics.

NBA Awards Bets

Many sportsbooks allow you to bet on individual player awards like the NBA Rookie of the Year Award and the NBA Most Valuable Player Award. Sites lay out the odds for the top contenders for each honor and generally include a “FIELD” option, which allows you to bet on every player who is not listed.

NBA Awards odds are typically available before the season tips off and are updated periodically throughout the year.
