Iowa Sports Betting

Updated: October 15, 2020

Iowa quickly legalized sports betting after the US Supreme Court lifted a federal ban by overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May 2018. Legal IA sports betting has been live since August 2019.

Both online and retail sports betting are allowed in Iowa. Currently, online players must visit a retail sportsbook location in-person to validate their accounts before wagering over the internet. This rule expires in January 2021, when mobile registration goes into effect. You must be 21 years old to bet on sports in Iowa.

This page features the best Iowa sportsbooks and betting apps, along with all the key info bettors need to know before jumping in on the action in the Hawkeye State.

Iowa Sports Betting at a Glance

Iowa was an early mover in the world of legal sports betting. It was one of the first Midwestern states to authorize both online and retail betting in August 2019.

The state has taken a measured, staged approach to the market rollout, with online bettors required to register their accounts in-person until January 2021. Once this temporary hybrid model expires, a major sports betting boom is expected in the Hawkeye State. The relatively low tax rates and licensing fees suggest a favorable environment for all the major operators.

Even with the requirement that every bettor visit a casino to place their first bet, Iowa is seeing some action. According to a revenue report released by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, the first half of 2020 saw $355,310,437 in sports betting handle, even with the COVID-19 Pandemic keeping casino doors shuttered.

Clearly, the state has an appetite for online betting that will only be further satiated once remote registration takes effect. Developed online markets like those in Pennsylvania and New Jersey have seen over 80% of wagers come through mobile betting apps, and we suspect Iowa will eventually experience similar numbers.

Regardless of which device you prefer to wager from, it’s crucial to choose a legal sportsbook for a safe and enjoyable betting experience in Iowa. Our sportsbook reviewers have spent hundreds of hours reviewing online betting sites and apps from all over the globe.

As the nation’s original political bellwether, Iowa’s residents have long been admired for their common-sense approach to policy and regulations.

With this political heritage in mind, it’s no surprise that Iowa sports betting laws strike the middle ground between strict consumer protections and business-friendly legislation that cuts costs and red tape for operators.

Sports betting in Iowa is authorized under Iowa SF617 and codified under Iowa Code Chapter 99. The legislation calls on the state’s racing and commission to outline and update the specific rules regulating the sports betting industry in Iowa.

The sections below summarize the most important info everyday bettors need to be aware of.

Online Sports Betting in Iowa

Iowa has moved slowly towards full-on online sports betting, with in-person registration requirements scheduled to expire on January 1, 2021. This will create the option for remote sports betting in the state.

In-Person Registration Required Until 2021

For now, bettors can still enjoy easy access to 24/7 live betting after verifying their account at an Iowa casino that is licensed to provide online sports betting.

Geolocation Required

Online bets can be placed from anywhere within the state, with betting apps and online sportsbooks required to use approved geofence software to prevent their services from being accessed beyond state lines.

If using a betting app, your phone’s location services will be integrated to provide this service. Make sure you enable it when prompted by your app. If betting from a computer, you’ll generally need to download a software package directly from the sportsbook. Frequent geo-checks are a great signal that you’re using a site licensed to operate in Iowa.

Despite the physical presence requirement, you do not need to live in Iowa to bet on sports there. You only need to be within the state lines to place a wager.

Bettors in the Omaha area or Wisconsin’s Driftless Region can easily drive across the state line and log in to their favorite Iowa betting app to place a few wagers.

Online Sports Betting Licenses

Sports betting licenses in Iowa are only issued to existing casinos in the state. Online operators must partner with these Iowa-based businesses in order to offer services in the state.

The state has a well-developed casino industry, and each licensed casino can partner with up to two online brands or “skins” under a single license. Online operators can also partner with multiple license holders. This means there is ample room in the market for both major online operators like DraftKings and William Hill.

Here are the current Iowa sports betting license holders and their online betting partners:

License Holder Online Betting Partner(s)
Catfish Bend Casino PointsBet
Diamond Jo Casino FanDuel
Diamond Jo Worth FanDuel
Harrah’s Council Bluffs Casino & Hotel Caesars
Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs Caesars
Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo William Hill
Isle of Capri – Bettendorf William Hill
Lakeside Hotel Casino William Hill
Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino William Hill
Wild Rose Casino & Resorts – Clinton DraftKings
Wild Rose Casino & Resorts – Emmetsburg DraftKings
Wild Rose Casino & Resorts – Jefferson DraftKings

Licensing fees and taxes for sports betting in Iowa are both very affordable for operators.

New sports wagering licenses cost just $45,000. The tax rate on sports betting is set at 6.75% of gross gaming receipts – or the amount of remaining revenue after winnings have been paid.

These exceptionally low barriers to market entry on ongoing overhead costs also benefit consumers. After all, lower operating budgets mean more profit, which also translates into better odds and juicier bonuses for consumers.

It also promotes a competitive marketplace where sports bettors in Iowa have many in-person and online betting options to choose from.

Iowa Retail Sports Betting: Bet In-Person at Casinos & Riverboats

The online market is expected to dominate Iowa sports betting once the in-person registration requirement expires in January 2021. Sportsbooks anticipate many bettors will want to mix things up with occasional visits to a retail, in-person sportsbook.

Luckily, they have plenty of choices. Iowa has long allowed in-person gambling and casinos, at both land-based tribal casinos and riverboats docked in the Mississippi River. Many of these existing casinos now include betting kiosks and classic Las Vegas-style sportsbooks.

We’re big fans of the convenience and flexibility that comes with betting online. That said – the electric environment on the sportsbook floor during major events like March Madness is hard to beat.

In Iowa, you can have the best of both worlds. Download an IA sports betting app to take advantage of the bonuses and bet on the go. Or visit your local casino whenever you want to soak up the excitement of a room full of bettors.

Iowa Sports Betting Rules & Restrictions

Iowa has placed few restrictions on the types of wagers sportsbooks can offer in the state. Restrictions on who is allowed to bet in the state are also minimal.

Sports betting rules in the state are outlined by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

Who Can Bet on Sports in Iowa?

Most adults can bet on sports both in person and over the internet. There are only a couple of exceptions.

You Must Be At Least 21 Years Old

The legal gambling age in Iowa is 21. Sportsbooks are required to verify your identity with government-issued identification. You must present ID when registering in-person at the retail partner of your online sportsbook.

Once online registration commences, e-verification software may be used to confirm your identity without the need to upload your ID.

Coaches, Players, and Others in Sports Are Prohibited

According to section 13.2 (7) of the Iowa sports betting rules, several categories of people are barred from wagering on sports in the state:

  • Coaches, athletic trainers, officials, players, or other individuals who participate in an authorized sporting event in which wagers may be accepted
  • Persons who are employed in a position with direct involvement with coaches, players, athletic trainers, officials, athletes or participants in an authorized sporting event in which wagers may be accepted

It’s worth noting that these restrictions apply to all events – not just those with a direct link to the prohibited individual.

Which Events Can I Bet on in Iowa?

Sportsbooks must receive approval for every type of sporting event they plan to offer wagering on. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission maintains a comprehensive list published here. This list is updated very frequently.

There are a few categories of events that are not eligible for wagering.

No Wagering on Player or Coaches Awards

Futures wagering on player awards such as Rookie or Player of the Year is explicitly prohibited in Iowa. While other forms of futures betting are fair game, the wagers must be tied to a sporting event itself (such as picking the Super Bowl winner), rather than on awards decided by a panel or the public.

You Cannot Bet on the NFL Draft

The rules also ban wagering on the NFL Draft. While other drafts have not to been approved nor banned to date, there’s no reason to suspect sportsbooks in Iowa will be allowed to offer wagers on draft events for any sport.

Only the Biggest Leagues Are Allowed

With the exceptions of the Olympics and NCAA collegiate competition, both amateur and “tier 2” or “minor league” events are off-limits.

In their own words: “Wagers are only allowed to be placed on the ‘premiere’ leagues for respective sports and NOT subordinate developmental leagues. I.e., MLB wagers are permissible, MiLB wagers are NOT permissible; NBA wagers are permissible, NBA G-League wagers are NOT permissible.”

Sports Betting Only: No Politics, eSports, or Entertainment

The list of approved wagers and general guidelines make it clear that Iowa sportsbooks are not authorized to offer odds and proposition on non-sporting events. Unfortunately, this also applies to the burgeoning world of eSports betting.

While looking at Presidential election odds is always interesting, it remains a spectator sport for Americans. Like all other states with legal sports betting, political outcomes are off-limits.

Which Types of Wagering Are Allowed on These Events?

Iowa allows all the most popular wagering types found at online betting sites, including:

  • Straight bets (Moneyline, spread, O/U)
  • Parlays & Accumulators
  • Pleasers & Teasers
  • Player & Championship Futures (No Awards Futures)
  • Live Betting
  • Props & Exotics

There are a few restrictions on prop betting you should be aware of:

  • No props determinable by one person in one play
  • No officiating-related props
  • No “inherently objectionable” props (Will any player suffer an injury, will any player be arrested during the off-season, how many games will an injured player miss, etc.)

Otherwise, expect to see a wide range of wagering types available at IA betting apps and online sportsbooks.

Iowa Sports Betting History

Particularly for a state in America’s Heartland, Iowa has a long history of regulated gambling.

Beginning with the Pari-Mutuel Act in 1983, legislators in the Hawkeye State have long understood the need to regulate betting to protect consumers and reduce the appeal of black market operators.

Riverboat gambling – now a tourism staple up and down the Mississippi River and beyond – first began in Iowa back in 1991. Multiple tribal casinos opened in the state the following year.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, the state legislature further amended Iowa’s gambling laws to welcome the growing sports betting industry seen in the state today.

Both retail and online sports betting went live in Iowa during August 2019.
