College World Series Format

The college baseball tournament features 64 teams: 30 automatic bids that go to the conference champions and 34 at-large selections. These 64 teams are split into 16 brackets of four. The top 16 ranked teams will all host a regional, which is the first round of the tournament. The four teams in each bracket then play each other in a double-elimination tournament. The winner of each regional will move on to the next round: Super Regionals.

The 16 teams that make it to the supers are split into eight pairings based on the original 64-team bracket. The pairings each play in a best of three series to advance to the College World Series.

Eight teams make it to Omaha, and they are split into two double-elimination brackets featuring four teams each. Once there is a winner from each of the two brackets, the two teams play in a best-of-three series to determine who the National Champion is.

College World Series History: Why Omaha?

Outside of the first few years of the tournament, every College World Series has been played in Omaha, NE. The first two years of the tournament were played in Kalamazoo, MI, and in 1949, the College World Series was played in Wichita, KS.

Omaha’s mayor, Johnny Rosenblatt, and some local businessmen watched the tournament in Wichita and saw potential. They made a pitch to the city, got a stadium built, and were able to host the tournament in 1950.

It was held at Omaha Municipal Stadium, which was renamed Rosenblatt Stadium in 1964, from 1950-2010. In 2011, the city of Omaha built a new stadium downtown in order to keep the tournament, and Charles Schwab Field is where the College World Series is played at today.

Which Team Has Won the Most College World Series?

While they haven’t won the College World Series since 1998, the USC Trojans have won the tournament the most. Southern California has won 12 National Championships total, including a stretch from 1968-1974 where the Trojans won six of seven titles.

How Does College Baseball Compare to the MLB?

The game itself is similar to the MLB, but the biggest difference is that college baseball uses metal bats instead of wooden bats. The ballparks are also much smaller.

These two factors plus worse pitching and defense result in higher-scoring games.

Is There a Run Rule in College Baseball?

Yes, run rules exist in college baseball. They are applied when a team has a lead of ten runs or more in the seventh inning. Run rules do not apply during the College World Series, however. For example, in the 2023 College World Series, Florida led LSU 15-2, but the game continued.
