NFL Week 3 Odds: Betting Lines, Spreads & Totals

Week 3 of the 2024-25 NFL season gets kicked off with a Thursday Night Football matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Jets. Aaron Rodgers and his Jets are listed as 6.5-point favorites at most sportsbooks, but they could be found only laying six at bet365.

The biggest spread of Week 3 isn’t far off what the Jets are laying, as there are a lot of small spreads this week. The San Francisco 49ers are the heaviest favorites at the moment, laying 7.5 points on the road versus the LA Rams. Matthew Stafford will have to play without his two favorite targets in Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, as both are out with injuries.

Some of the games I am looking forward to the most in Week 3 include:

  • Texans at Vikings, where Houston is listed as 2.5-point road favorites
  • Eagles at Saints, where the hottest team to start the season is getting 1 point at home
  • Ravens at Cowboys, where Baltimore, at 0-2, is listed as a 1-point road favorite in what feels like a must-win for them

How to Read NFL Odds

If this is your first time jumping into sports betting, you may be wondering how to read the NFL moneyline, point spread, and over/under odds found on this page.

This article provides a full run-down of how to read odds and how oddsmakers formulate them, but here are the basics for each betting option:

NFL Moneyline Odds

Betting the moneyline is the simplest NFL bet you can make. You’re simply picking one team to win the game outright. Select “moneyline” in the feed preferences above to see this week’s NFL moneyline odds.

The positive number in moneyline betting is the odds for the underdog. This is the amount you stand to profit if you place a $100 bet on the underdog.

The negative number is the odds for the favorite. This is the amount you’ll need to risk in order to return a $100 profit backing the favorite.

While unusual, there are football games where both teams will have negative moneyline odds. In this case, the side with the larger negative number is the favorite.

NFL Point Spread Odds

Many NFL matchups aren’t exactly unpredictable. When one side is heavily favored, the point spread keeps things interesting. By “taking” points from the favorite and “giving” them to the underdog, the NFL point spread makes it possible to back either side, even in a very lopsided matchup. Select “spread” to see the odds for this week’s NFL spreads.

The amount of points given from the favorite and taken by the underdog is the spread – you’ll see this number displayed next to a (+) for the underdog (since they are getting extra points) and a (-) for the favorite (since points are being subtracted.

To cover the spread, the favorite must win the game by the margin of the point spread. The underdog covers anytime they win the game outright or lose by less than the margin outlined by the spread.

Next to the point spread, you’ll find odds like those you’d see on the moneyline. These will generally be in the range of -105 to -115 for most NFL point spreads, indicating the amount you need to risk to win $100. In NFL spread betting, you often won’t see the odds attached to the line get any longer than +100.

NFL Over/Under (Totals) Odds

Betting totals is another popular way to wager on NFL games. Commonly known as the over/under, totals betting asks you to wager on whether the final score with be over or under the total set by the oddsmakers.

Compare NFL over/under odds by selecting “total” in preferences. You’ll see a large number with both (o) & (u) – this is the total. Bet on the final score to be over or under this number.

Like the point spread, you’ll see odds associated with taking the over or under. With some exceptions, expect to see these odds in the range of -105 to -115 when betting NFL over/under lines.

Vegas NFL Odds vs. Online Betting Odds

If you’ve been around long enough to remember the sports page, you’re probably familiar with “Vegas odds” being reported for NFL matchups.

As most legal football betting moves from retail sportsbooks in Vegas to online sports betting apps, you might be wondering:

What are Las Vegas NFL odds? Are Vegas odds for this week’s NFL games any different than those offered at sport betting apps and online sportsbooks?

Generally speaking, NFL odds like those featured on this page will be in-line with what you could expect to see a brick-and-mortar sportsbook in a Vegas casino.

Today, “Vegas odds” have become something of a catch-all phrase to describe the consensus NFL odds offered at top sportsbooks, whether betting online or in-person.

Find the Best Site to Bet on NFL Games

How to bet on the NFL

The NFL offers plenty of betting options! The simplest ways to bet on the NFL are traditional moneyline (who is going to win the game), spread (will a team win by a certain amount), and game total (over/under a certain amount of points to be scored). You can also bet on specific players to have good/bad games, as well as specific events within the game.

What are NFL daily lines?

NFL daily lines are simply the betting odds available each day. It is very rare to see a day where NFL betting lines are not available, since the following week's odds are typically available before the current week even ends. You can find all the daily NFL lines at SBD's NFL odds page!

Is the NFL easy to bet on?

Whether the NFL is easy to bet on will depend on who you ask. But as an expert in the space who knows how much sportsbooks pull in during NFL season, I would have to say the answer is no. One of the reasons the NFL is so entertaining is because of the parity. Upsets happen on a weekly basis. Heavy favorites don't perform well certain weeks. Some schemes matchup really well against others, regardless of the talent on the field. This isn't to say you cannot be profitable betting on the NFL, as many people are. However, you have to do your research and attempt to remove any biases.

How do NFL football odds work?

The most common football odds being bet are the moneyline, spread, and total. The moneyline odds tell you which team is favored and how much money you will win based off your wager. The spread attempts to even the playing field, adding a handicap to one team and forcing them to win by a certain amount of points in order for you to win if betting on them. This means you can bet the underdog to cover the spread, and they don't have to win the game in order for your bet to cash. They just can't lose by more than the spread dictates. The game total gives you the option to just bet on the number of points scored in the game, meaning you're not betting on one team or the other. You're either betting on points or no points. Leading up to kickoff, all of these NFL odds will change from what they opened at. This is the result of money coming in disproportionally on one side.
