Past performance is a strong indicator of future results when it comes to the MLB. In that vein, SBD has created this batter-vs-pitcher page, which displays the full BvP stats for each of today’s starting pitchers against the opposing lineup he will be facing.

By default, the table (below) shows the ten batters with the best batting average against today’s starting pitcher. Under “Select View”, readers can navigate to “Hot Pitcher Matchups” or the BvP stats for each individual game.

How to Read the BvP Table

Hot Batter Matchups

The “Hot Batter Matchups” tab should be self-explanatory. It lists the top hitters (by batting average) against today’s starting pitcher on the opposing team. Batters with fewer than five at-bats against the opposing starter are not included in that section. But navigating to each game (using the “Select View” option) allows readers to see full BvP stats for each player in today’s lineup against the opposing starter.

Hot Pitcher Matchups

In the “Hot Pitcher Matchups” tab (second in the drop-down menu under “Select View”), today’s starters are listed in order of their batting average allowed to the opposing lineup. If the opposing lineup has fewer than five total at-bats against the opposing starter, the pitcher is omitted from the list.

Note that the pitcher stats are based on results against each team’s current lineup, not historical performances against the team he’s facing today.

Individual Games

As mentioned, readers can navigate to each game on today’s schedule using the drop-down menu under “Select View”. In these tabs, readers will find the full statistics for every player on each roster who has at least one plate appearance against the opposing starter.

Note that this can include players who don’t wind-up being in the starting lineup. Players who are on the injured list are not included.
