DraftKings Michigan

Since the start of online sports betting in Michigan on January 22, 2021, DraftKings has been a reliable sportsbook for Michigan users. After the first month of legal sports betting in Michigan, DraftKings owned a 24.5 percent market share in the state.

With one of the safest platforms in the state, DraftKings continues to attract Michigan users to their online sportsbook. Not to mention, DraftKings operates under the Bay Mills Resort and Casino and they’re inching closer to opening a retail sportsbook at the casino. As they continue to be a top player in Michigan, DraftKings has also signed a local partnership with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

FanDuel Michigan

FanDuel Sportsbook launched in Michigan in March 2020 but only for retail sports betting at the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit. It proved to be short-lived during the COVID-19 pandemic due to casino closures, but on January 22, 2021, sports bettors in the Great Lakes State became able to bet on the FanDuel app and website when online wagering became legal across Michigan.

With a abundance of betting options for all experience levels, FanDuel Sportsbook has become one of the top destinations for sports bettors in America. As of April 2021, FanDuel entered into partnerships with both the MLB’s Detroit Tigers and NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. FanDuel branding will be displayed at both teams’ home fields, Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena.

BetMGM Michigan

It’s no surprise that BetMGM has a strong presence in Michigan, considering the MGM Grand Detroit is one of the most popular venues in the Wolverine State. Online sports betting in Michigan didn’t launch until January 22, 2021, but BetMGM quickly jumped to an early lead as a go-to choice for many sports bettors.

As a staple in the Michigan sports betting scene, BetMGM has signed official partnerships in the state with numerous professional teams, including the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, the MLB’s Detroit Tigers, and the NFL’s Detroit Lions. Furthermore, Detroit legend and former NBA player Jalen Rose is a brand ambassador. With a household brand name and a fantastic sportsbook, BetMGM is going to dominate the Michigan market for years to come.

PointsBet Michigan

PointsBet was one of ten online sportsbooks to go live in Michigan when the Wolverine State opened its virtual doors on Friday, January 22, 2021. The Australian brand has a rapidly growing presence in America. Its signature product is its own unique form of wagering known as PointsBetting, which offers a twist on the usual point spread and totals wagers found elsewhere.

PointsBet Michigan has a huge number of promotions as well as a traditional loyalty program. Hockey fans will be pleased to know PointsBet is an official partner of the Detroit Red Wings and typically has the most competitive odds on NHL games thanks to their partnership with the league.

BetRivers Michigan

BetRivers launched its award-winning mobile app in Michigan on January 22, 2021. The sportsbook immediately joined a crowded but booming online gaming market when the Great Lakes State finally allowed online wagering. BetRivers also entered into a partnership with the Detroit Pistons, albeit not an exclusive one.

The BetRivers mobile betting app is unfortunately only available to Android users at this time. Hopefully an Apple version will be made available soon. Michigan bettors who crave extra excitement during games should check out the BetRivers live betting platform. It’s one of the best in the business, complete with pre-game statistics and a fun social component few other sportsbooks provide. An added bonus is that BetRivers customers can get free live streaming within the app for many sports events.

FOX Bet Michigan

Sports betting launched in Michigan on January 22, 2021, and FOX Bet wasn’t far behind, going live exactly a week later. The Stars Group works alongside FOX Sports to bring bettors the FOX Bet platform, and they also helped secure market access with a local partnership.

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Gaming Authority signed an agreement with FOX Bet to help bring them into the booming Michigan sports betting market. FOX Bet has also partnered with Paysafe to bring Skrill and Paysafecard payment methods to bettors in Michigan, making it even easier to wager with this tremendous sportsbook.

Caesars Sportsbook Michigan

Previously active under the William Hill Sportsbook brand name, Caesars Sportsbook is poised to be a big player on the Michigan sports betting scene. To really make a splash upon their arrival, Caesars Sportsbook Michigan offered new customers a $5,000 risk-free bet so they could wager on their favorite teams from the the NFL’s Lions to the NHL’s Red Wings and beyond.

Caesars Michigan is also partnered with local retail locations at Turtle Creek Casino in Williamsburg, MI and Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown, MI. The company has an official partnership with the NFL and an impressive lineup of brand ambassadors, including former ESPN host Trey Wingo and a national advertising campaign starring actor-comedians JB Smoove and Patton Oswalt.

Golden Nugget Michigan

Golden Nugget Online Casino and Sportsbook launched in Michigan on January 22, 2021. Their sportsbook is run on the open sports platform developed by Scientific Games. Residents in the Great Lakes State are able to bet on Golden Nugget’s website and through their mobile app as well as in person through a partnership with the Ojibwa Casino & the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

In July 2021, Golden Nugget expanded its presence in Michigan through partnerships with the Detroit City Football Club in the NISA, as well as with the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic golf tournament. On August 9, 2021, Golden Nugget Online Gaming was acquired by DraftKings for $1.56 billion.

Barstool Sportsbook Michigan

The state of Michigan was always primed to welcome Barstool Sportsbook. Penn National Gaming purchased the Greektown Casino in Detroit, MI back in May of 2019, months before Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill legalizing sports betting in the Great Lakes State.

Penn National and Barstool were ready with a retail location when Michigan began accepting in-person wagers in March of 2020. They were also quick to launch their mobile betting app when Michigan online sports betting went live on January 22, 2021. As one of the biggest sports betting states in the nation, Michigan has tons of fans ready to bet with Barstool Sportsbook.

TwinSpires Michigan

TwinSpires Michigan is partnered with Island Resort & Casino in Harris, MI. The online sportsbook was one of more than a dozen to begin taking bets on January 22, 2021, when the Great Lakes State officially launched legal online sports betting.

The retail location on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has been around since September 2020 and offers plenty of self-serve betting kiosks. Owned by horse racing and gaming conglomerate Churchill Downs, Inc., TwinSpires Sportsbook is a relatively new name, but it’s backed by decades of gambling industry expertise. Michigan bettors looking for a trustworthy brand for wagering on horses, sports, and online casino games should look no further than TwinSpires.

WynnBET Michigan

WynnBET launched in Michigan on January 22, 2021, along with several other major sportsbook operators. To do so, WynnBET partnered with the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Interestingly, Michigan is one of just a couple states where you can also wager on a desktop browser as well as through the ever-reliable WynnBET app. Michigan bettors can also access the WynnBET online casino through the same integrated platform.

In July 2021, WynnBET announced its first-ever NFL partnership, a multi-year deal with the Detroit Lions. The best part about this is that when the 2021 NFL season kicks off, there will be a WynnBET Sports Bar at Ford Field near section 222.

Michigan Online Sports Betting Apps and Mobile Betting

As of January 22, 2021, Michigan sports bettors are able to place a wager from anywhere in the state, at any time.

Even with casinos and retail sportsbooks located within the state’s largest city, there’s little doubt that mobile betting will ultimately dominate the Michigan market.

In a world where sports fans already use their phones to read up on their favorite sports and even watch games, it’s undeniably also the most convenient platform for placing wagers.

The most successful sports betting platforms make it easy to explore the odds, manage your bankroll, and follow live action on the go. Luckily, the biggest brand names in legal US sports betting all got their start as mobile apps. The largest neighboring states that launched sports betting before Michigan quickly adopted these platforms, like the popular sportsbooks in IL for example.

Some popular sportsbook apps are market-specific, meaning you will be required to download the ‘MI version’ to place wagers in Michigan.

Legal Michigan Sports Betting: Covering the Basics

Sports betting in Illinois has been legal since December 2019, when Governor Gretchen Whitmer – an increasingly prominent leader in the Democratic Party – signed HB 4307 into law.

Michigan’s sports betting laws create space for significant consumer choice within a competitive market. Michigan plans to issue 15 licenses for online sports betting, and all of the states 26 existing casinos can operate retail sportsbooks on their premises.

You can review the complete letter of the law in the Lawful Sports Betting Act, and more specific rules regulating the industry are forthcoming from the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The board has also created a comprehensive online info center for internet sports betting & gaming in Michigan.

We summarize the most important details in the sections below.

Michigan Sports Betting Rules and Regulations

Michigan has finalized most of the rules that regulate sports betting operators in the state. The first retail sportsbooks opened in Michigan just days before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many casinos could not take advantage of the new regulations before the closures.

This roadblock accelerated the approval of online betting in Michigan.

Who Can Bet on Sports in Michigan?

Most adults in Michigan can legally bet on sports both online and in licensed casinos.

You need to be at least 21 years old, and online sportsbooks must verify your identity using software approved by regulators. You must be physically located within state lines to bet with Michigan licensed sportsbooks, but you do not need to be a resident of the state.

This means sports bettors in Ontario, Canada are free to make the short drive into Detroit to place their wagers in a regulated and legal environment.

Those with a serious criminal record or who have been placed on a gambling exclusion list anywhere in the United States are also prohibited from participating in Michigan sports wagering.

Which Sports and Events Can I Bet on in Michigan?

You can bet on most major sports and events in the state of Michigan. Some examples include the following:

  • MLB
  • NFL
  • NBA
  • NCAA college football and basketball

We expect most competitive events with a verifiable outcome and element of skill, such as eSports for example, will be considered fair game.

Which Types of Wagering Are Allowed on These Events?

Michigan’s sports betting law does not expressly prohibit any form of wagering. The law suggests that “sports betting includes, but is not limited to, single-game bets, teaser bets, parlays, over-under, money line, pools, exchange betting, in-game betting, in-play bets, proposition bets, and straight bets.”

You can find the following popular options at Michigan sportsbooks and betting apps:

  • Straight bets (Moneyline, spread, O/U)
  • Parlays & Accumulators
  • Pleasers & Teasers
  • Player & Championship Futures
  • Live Betting
  • Props & Exotics

Michigan is one of a handful of states that require sportsbooks to use official league data in the grading of live wagers. This has been a controversial issue, with the leagues contending they are the only reliable source of real-time data. Most industry observers and operators suggest this position is simply a ploy for underserved profit off the gaming industry.

Michigan’s law allows sportsbooks to seek other sources of data when leagues don’t offer the service at a “commercially reasonable” cost.

Licensing, Taxes, and Online Sports Betting in Michigan

Online sports betting is available in Michigan, but it didn’t happen overnight. State regulators had to create a framework for betting sites before launching in January 2021.

Remote Registration Allowed

Michiganders have the ability to register, fund, and wager with MI online sportsbooks without ever stepping foot on a casino floor.

Unlike some other states that have required bettors to verify their accounts in-person at a licensed retail location, fully remote registration is allowed in the Wolverine State. This is great news for sportsbooks as well – in-person registration requirements have significantly dented the growth of online gaming in states such as Nevada and Iowa.

Geolocation Required

Michigan sports betting apps and online betting sites are required to check user’s location whenever they attempt to place a wager or fund their accounts.

Most betting apps have integrated this functionality with the location services on your mobile device. Computer users will generally need to download an unobtrusive software package directly from their sportsbook website. Legal sportsbooks in TN, or any other state operators for that matter, use this technology to comply with rules and regulations. These regulations might seem complicated, but really, you should feel even more confident placing a bet with these measures in place.

Most online sportsbooks are licensed to accept wagers from anywhere within the state of Michigan. Tribal casinos also have the option of offering online sports betting that is geo-restricted to “Indian Lands” without the requirement for an online gaming license.

You do not need to be a Michigan resident to use a betting app or online betting site in the state. Location requirements apply to your physical presence within state lines rather than your regular place of residence.

Online Sports Betting Licenses

Sports betting licenses in Michigan can be granted to any of the state’s three commercial casinos, and any tribal casino that is authorized to offer Class III gaming by the National Indian Gaming Commission. In total, there will 15 sports betting licenses available in the state.

There is no distinction between online and retail sports betting in terms of licensing for operators. Each casino that meets the criteria above is free to operate one brick-and-mortar sportsbook on the premises, and one online wagering platform available across Michigan.

Casinos can partner with major online sports betting brands such as FanDuel, DraftKings sportsbook, and PointsBet to provide their online betting platform. These online providers must obtain a “sportsbook supplier license” before providing services to Michigan’s licensed casinos.

Licenses are relatively affordable, with a MI sportsbook licensing fee of $100,000. Annual renewals cost $50,000, and there is a non-refundable $50,000 application fee upon initial consideration for a license.

The Michigan sports betting tax rate is also among the lowest in the nation, set at 8.4% of adjusted gross gaming revenue according to the latest MI revenue figures. The three casinos within Detroit are assessed for an additional 1.25% municipal tax.

Michigan Casino Sports Betting: What You Need to Know

Michigan has a fairly large number of casinos compared to most states, and most of them are eligible for sports betting licenses.

Three commercial casinos located in Detroit launched sportsbooks on their premises immediately following the launch of MI sports betting. They were quickly followed by one tribal casino, with more expected to follow over the next year.

We’re huge advocates for the convenience and flexibility that comes with online betting.  It’s hard to beat the ability to bet on your favorite sports from anywhere, at any time. That said, betting at a brick-and-mortar sportsbook does have its advantages.

The atmosphere on the sportsbook floor during an NFL Sunday or other major sporting events is hard to replicate in your own living room. If you’re looking to monitor the action surrounded by like-minded sports bettors, it’s worth checking out Michigan’s in-person sports betting options.

The following casinos currently offer retail sports betting in Michigan:

  • Greektown Casino
  • MGM Grand Detroit
  • Firekeepers Casino Hotel
  • MotorCity Casino Hotel

While we advise you bet with your head and not your heart, sometimes your home team overtakes that logic. Between the local major league teams in Michigan and the ever-so-close Toronto in Canada, you have no shortage of home teams to choose from. NY state could also be a great alternative if New York sportsbooks ever get the green light to launch online betting.

  • Detroit Tigers

  • Detroit Red Wings
  • Detroit Pistons

  • Toronto Raptors
  • Toronto Blue Jays

To help you make the most educated bets, we have a multitude of betting tools and editorial coverage on a wide range of events.

Michigan Sports Betting History

Michigan has had legal gaming options since the first tribal casino opened nearly 30 years ago, and has expanded rapidly in the state since then. Three commercial casinos in Detroit were quickly authorized to avoid the loss of tax revenue once casinos opened across the water in Ontario.

With this healthy existing gaming industry, Michigan was well-positioned to become one of the first states to embrace legal sports betting. Even though sports betting in IN and sportsbooks in IA took over the neighboring areas at a faster pace, Michigan has more potential to become a real hub for sports bettors.

Here are some key moments along the path to legalization:

2015 – 2017: Robert Kosowki (D) introduces several pieces of legislation aimed at legalizing and regulating sports betting in Michigan, contingent on a repeal of the federal ban outlined in PASPA.

Although these efforts are ultimately unsuccessful, they lay the groundwork for legal sports betting in the Wolverine State once PASPA is repealed.

May 2018: The US Supreme Court overturns PASPA, leaving each state to regulate sports betting as they see fit.

December 2018: Outgoing Governor Rick Snyder (R) vetoes legislation legalizing online gaming, including sports betting, stating that he believes it will increase the prevalence of problem gambling in the state.

December 2019: The state legislature passes the Lawful Sports Betting Act, which is signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D). The bill legalizes online and retail sports betting in Michigan.

March 2020: The first wagers are accepted at Detroit casinos. Just five days into legal MI betting, the COVID-19 pandemic forces casinos to temporarily shut their doors.

June 2020: Gaming regulators in Michigan signal their desire to accelerate the approval of online betting to late 2020.

December 2020: Michigan officials issue 15 provisional licenses for individual sportsbooks looking to operate online.

Despite issuing licenses, the launch of online sports betting in Michigan is delayed until early 2021.

January 2021: Online sports betting launched in Michigan on January 22, 2021.

February 2021: The Four Winds Casino becomes the 11th provider for online sports betting in the state of Michigan.

March 2021: The first full month of sports betting in Michigan was huge, as the total betting handle surpassed $300 million in February 2021.
