World Cup Opening Round Odds: Key Match Breakdown

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will open with group play matches on Thursday, June 11, as co-host Mexico will take on South Africa at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

That kicks off a month-long celebration of the world’s game, with a winner crowned July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Here are some key matches to watch for in the first set of group matches:

  • Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, June 12: The Canadians will be favored in Toronto as they open the World Cup against a Bosnia team that advanced through a playoff by defeating Italy on PKs.
  • USA vs. Paraguay, June 13: The USMNT will be under immense pressure as it opens the tournament in Inglewood, Calif. It will be a slight favorite in a game that will tell us just how prepared Mauricio Pochettino’s squad is.
  • Brazil vs. Morocco, June 13: One of the pre-tournament favorites in Brazil draws upstart Morocco, which made a run to the semifinals in 2022 and has proven incredibly difficult to play against.
  • Netherlands vs. Japan, June 14: This match could very well determine Group F. While the Dutch are the favorites, Japan is incredibly technical and will pose problems for anyone in the field, and is one of the World Cup underdogs to bet on through the tournament.
  • Iran vs. New Zealand, June 16: The interest here is more off the field than on, as the Iranians could be coming to California while their country is in an active conflict with the host nation.
  • France vs. Senegal, June 16: Senegal won AFCON before it didn’t (Morocco was given the title after a review), and will get a chance to prove itself on the world stage right away against one of the favorites to win it all.
  • Iraq vs. Norway, June 16: Erling Haaland in his first World Cup? Yes, please.
  • Argentina vs. Algeria, June 17: Lionel Messi in his last World Cup (probably)? Yes, please.
  • England vs. Croatia, June 17: Anytime the English step on the pitch it’s interesting, mainly because the post-match is banter is sure to be calm and level-headed.
