Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the United States, but it was one of the first to legalize sports betting.

The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned on May 14, 2018. On that day, courts voted to allow each state to propose and create their own laws and regulations for sports betting.

The Ocean State moved quickly to regulate sports betting. By November 26, 2018, Rhode Island became the eighth state to legalize sports betting.

Rhode Island residents can bet on sports at two casino locations and through a statewide mobile app. The casinos were built after voter referendums in 2012 and 2016. Both offer numerous slots and table games.

Bettors can also partake in daily fantasy games and the state lottery. If Rhode Island sports bettors are looking for places to bet immediately, Connecticut will be option shortly. In a short drive, Rhode Island residents can place bets on the Connecticut online sportsbooks.

The Twin River casino properties offer legal sports betting both onsite and online as of September 2019. Through a partnership with IGT and William Hill, bettors can wager in-person, online, or with the statewide app at either sportsbook.

Originally, bettors needed to register their account in-person at one of two casinos. However, as of July 23, 2020, remote registration is permitted as well.
