  • Barstool Sportsbook missed out on an opening day New York online sports betting license
  • Plenty of potential for Barstool Sportsbook New York to launch sometime in 2022
  • Nine online sportsbooks have been approved for New York online sports betting launch day

The first round of licenses for online New York sports betting has come and gone and there was one very notable sportsbook missing from the pack.

Barstool Sportsbook was not chosen to be one of first nine online sportsbooks to receive a coveted New York sports betting license. For loyal “Stoolies” in the state, that means Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy won’t have his popular sportsbook active in New York come launch day.

But that doesn’t mean all hope is lost. Once online sports betting goes live in New York in the coming weeks, there will almost certainly be an opportunity for additional sportsbooks to enter the fray come next year.

So the big question remains: when is Barstool Sportsbook coming to New York? To get some type of indication, we need to get a better understanding of the New York sports betting landscape and how Barstool Sportsbook could potentially fit into that picture.

Barstool Sportsbook Appears To Be Perfect NY Fit

The Barstool Sports brand already has a massive presence in New York state. Despite launching in Massachusetts in 2003, the sports media company moved its headquarters to New York City in 2016. Since then, Barstool Sports has been a staple in the Big Apple and the company’s founder, Dave Portnoy, can often be seen in the city doing his viral one bite pizza reviews.

In January 2020, Penn National Gaming bought a 36% stake in Barstool Sports valued at around $163 million. The deal with Penn National Gaming gave Barstool Sports the infrastructure it needed to launch its own sportsbook, aptly named Barstool Sportsbook, in September 2020.

Since Barstool Sportsbook’s launch, it has opened up shop in several US states including Arizona, Colorado, and Virginia—just to name a few. Of all the current markets that Barstool Sportsbook is available in, the company’s close ties to New York feel like an appropriate next landing spot for the sportsbook.

How Does Dave Portnoy Feel About Barstool Sportsbook in New York?

Dave Portnoy is a polarizing figure in the world of sports media. His backers are undyingly loyal to the man known as “El Pres,” but his outspoken personality has also made him something of a target among mainstream media as well.

Interestingly enough, Portnoy spoke about Barstool Sportsbook’s New York sports betting license snub on a November 2021 episode of The Dave Portnoy Show with Eddie & Co. “El Pres” said he had mixed feelings when it came to not receiving a sports betting license in New York because of the high tax rate set upon sportsbooks in the state.

With that in mind, Portnoy concluded by saying “Would I rather be in New York than not? Yes. (But) If you’re going to pick a state not to get into because of the tax, like, ‘OK, this is (fine). No one’s making money.'”

It’s difficult to say just how aggressively Portnoy and Barstool Sportsbook will be pursuing a license in 2022, but it’d be ridiculous to suggest they’re completely off the NY sports betting train at this point in time.

Don’t Forget About the Other Sportsbooks Coming to NY

Just because Barstool Sportsbook hasn’t stepped into the NY spotlight just yet, there’s no shortage of reputable sportsbooks that have been approved in the state.

You can expect DraftKings Sportsbook to bring their beloved $1,050 Sign-Up Offer to New York. Meanwhile, FanDuel Sportsbook will probably have their Risk-Free Bet up to $1,000 in tow and BetMGM will likely follow suit with their own $1,000 Risk-Free Bet Sign Up Offer.
