Hoyas Underwhelming Out of the Gate
Georgetown is fresh off back-to-back victories after dropping its season opener to Dartmouth. Last time out, the Hoyas crushed Siena 83-65, extending the Saints winless streak to four games.
Kaiden Rice led the way with 23 points, knocking down seven of his 10 long range attempts. Donald Carey poured in 20, while Dante Harris added 14, and Aminu Mohammed chipped in 11.
With a combined 43 points from Kaiden Rice and @donnc_13 it was an instant classic for our backcourt last night against Siena.

Georgetown shot a blistering 57.1% from the field, and 66.7% from beyond the arc. Incredible shooting efficiency hasn’t been a common theme for the Hoyas this season, and was likely a product of a horrendous Siena defense. The Saints rank 290th in defensive efficiency per KenPom, and have yielded at least 69 points in every outing this season.

The Hoyas rank 111th in points per game, and 72nd in effective field goal percentage for the season, and their defensive numbers aren’t much better. Georgetown is the country’s 83rd ranked scoring defense, and ranks 95th in opponent effective field goal percentage. Outside of their matchup with Siena, they’ve struggled to defend the perimeter ranking 163rd in opponent three-point field goal percentage.
Aztecs Stout On D
San Diego State meanwhile, is off to a 3-1 start. Like the Hoyas, they’ve also racked up back-to-back wins, and have been involved in three straight tight games.
Last time out, they snuck past UT Arlington 68-62, led by Matt Bradley. The senior guard poured in 15 points in the victory, while Trey Pulliam was the only other Aztec to score in double-figures with 11.

San Diego State shot just 34.8% from the field, which isn’t necessarily a shock. They Aztecs rank 242nd in points per game, and 283rd in effective field goal percentage.
Defense is their calling card, and they delivered another strong effort at that end of the court versus the Mavericks. San Diego State held UT Arlington to 38.5% from the field, while forcing 13 turnovers, and recording five blocks.

The Aztecs rank 50th in opponent points per game, 35th in opponent effective field goal percentage, and are 28th at the defending the three-point line.
Georgetown vs San Diego State Pick
San Diego State has yet to yield more than 66 points all season, and coupled with their offensive struggles it’s no wonder the majority of their games have gone under. Three of their four outings have failed to clear the total, and none have produced more than 130 points. They’re 17th in defensive efficiency per KenPom, and should be able to neutralize the Hoyas offense.

This is a major step up in competition for Georgetown, as they’ve yet to face a team ranked inside the top-235. Two of their three contests have gone under the total, and this game sets-up as a low scoring slog as well. The Hoyas rank 83rd in tempo, while the Aztecs rank 288th.
