Every time Spanish Rafael Nadal takes the clay at the French Open Roland Garros is history in the making, and Serbian Novak Djokovic is the only player standing between him and his favorite trophy. Nadal and Djokovic clash in the 2014 final this Sunday at 9 AM ET.
It shouldn’t be a surprise Nadal is the favorite in the tennis odds, listed -137 to win the title in the money line; he is already a record eight-time champion with a 65-1 career record at Roland Garros.
Djokovic is listed +110 to upset Nadal in the final: something no one has done in eight tries at the French Open.
“I’m going to try to be aggressive because that is the only way I can win against him,” Djokovic said. “I know that, of course, this is the court he’s most dominant on. He has only lost one time in his career. This is where he plays his best.”
“Of course pressure is there,” Djokovic added. “Expectations are there. They are always present when you are playing on this level. But I’m trying to channel this energy into the right direction and not get carried away too much by the stress of the occasion.”
These two players have played each other an Open Era record 41 times, with Nadal holding a 22-19 advantage. However, since 2011, 16 of their 18 meetings have been in finals; six of them were Grand Slams finals.
The ‘Djoker’ has won the last four meetings in all tournaments.
