FanDuel will soon be shutting down at least a portion of its Arizona sports betting market.
FanDuel recently announced it will be closing its brick-and-mortar sportsbook at PHX Arena, home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, next month. The arena sportsbook opened on Sept. 8, 2021, the first day of legalized sports betting in the Grand Canyon State. At the time, the Suns arena was known as the Footprint Center.
The Arizona sportsbook will officially shut down and become a FanDuel lounge on July 24.
Miniscule Arizona Sports Betting Handle Totals
According to azcentral.com, a sign at the arena’s sportsbook alerted customers to the change and read the following:
“In-person wagering at the FanDuel Sportsbook located in the Phoenix Suns Arena will permanently cease at the close of business on July 24, as the space is converted to a FanDuel lounge.”
Any winning bets after this date can be cashed through the mail-in process described on the back of each ticket.
\Three Arizona professional sports franchises currently feature brick-and-mortar sportsbooks at their facilities. The Phoenix Suns partnered with FanDuel for a sportsbook, the Arizona Diamondbacks partnered with Caesars Sportsbook for a facility at Chase Field, and the Arizona Cardinals partnered with BetMGM for a facility at State Farm Stadium.
DraftKings also has a sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale.
The 7,400 square-foot FanDuel sportsbook included 40 televisions, five betting windows, and 26 self-serve sports betting kiosks. However, the brick-and-mortar sportsbook typically only reported a little more than $1 million in handle each month, a miniscule amount of business when compared with FanDuel’s online sports betting handle in the state. The sportsbook usually only contributed about 1% to FanDuel’s total Arizona handle for each month.
The brick-and-mortar sportsbook also began to see diminishing revenues over the last six months.
Revenues Diminished in Last Half Year
The PHX Arena sportsbook only recorded two profitable months since February, including losing more than $2 million in September, according to the Arizona Department of Gaming.
The bottom came in September 2024, when the sportsbook reported $7,203,444 in total handle, but paid out $9,864,439 in winnings to customers for the month. It lost more than $2.6 million for the month.
The most successful month in 2025 the brick-and-mortar facility experienced was March 2024, when it reported $294,369 in revenue.
