Penn State vs Ohio State Predictions
Ohio State Continues to Roll
Ohio State has been ranked No.1 in the AP Poll since Week 2, but the Buckeyes only seem to keep improving. As massive favorites this week, I expect them to maintain the course and blow out Penn State.
Consider that Ohio State has only lost to two programs in the last seven regular seasons: Oregon (twice) and Michigan (four times). Against all other teams, Ohio State is an absurd 64-0 in its last 64 regular-season and conference championship games. Penn State has not beaten Ohio State since 2016.
Freshman Lumps for Ethan Grunkemeyer
After Drew Allar went down with a season-ending injury, freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer has stepped in as QB1 for Penn State. He made his first start last week, struggling to the tune of just 93 yards and two interceptions on 29 passes. He had a 29.8 passer rating and a 56.3 PFF passing grade.
With Ohio State’s historic defense up next, expect Penn State to rely on the running game for as long as possible. Last week, Kaytron Allen had a whopping 28 rush attempts against Iowa, rumbling for 145 yards and two touchdowns. If he can do that again, perhaps Penn State can keep the game within striking distance.
Once again, Penn State has a pretty clear lack of receiver talent. While three wide receivers and one tight end are averaging at least 30 yards per game, no pass-catcher is over 40 yards per game. On money downs, Grunkemeyer will not have an obvious go-to for conversions.
2026 Draft Prospects Shine
Both teams have a slew of players who will be drafted early in April’s NFL Draft. On Ohio State’s side, Caleb Downs, Carnell Tate, and Arvell Reese look like first-round picks. Sonny Styles and Davison Igbinosun could also go in the top 50.
On Penn State’s side, watch for the defensive duo of Dani Dennis-Sutton (edge) and A.J. Harris (cornerback) to wreak havoc in an attempt to keep the Nittany Lions in the game. In the trenches, guard Olaivavega Ioane faces one of his toughest assignments. Ioane has had first-round buzz thus far this season.
Penn State vs Ohio State Bets
- Ohio State -20.5 (-110, FanDuel)
I’ll admit this is pretty square bet. Penn State is a shocking 1-6 against the spread this season, while Ohio State is a nearly flawless 6-0-1 against the spread.
Penn State’s four losses have come by a combined 13 points, including a pair of one-point losses. They managed to cover in their last game as underdogs, losing by one as 3.5-point underdogs at Iowa.
On the other hand, Ohio State has been a buzzsaw. In four games as 20-point favorites, the Buckeyes have covered three times and pushed the other game (Ohio). In Big Ten play, they have covered by 8.5, 15.5, 3.5, and 9.0 points, respectively. For the season, Ohio State’s average margin of victory is 30.5 points per game.
- Under 43.5 (-110, FanDuel)
This is a bet on Ohio State’s historic defense. Through seven games, only Illinois has managed to score 10 points against the Buckeyes. All told, Ohio State is allowing 5.9 points per game. The under is 5-2 in Ohio State’s games this year.
Penn State’s defense has largely been up to the challenge as well. Outside of a disastrous outing against UCLA and overtime versus Oregon, Penn State’s defense has kept them competitive in Big Ten play. The over is 5-2 in Penn State’s games this year, but this includes a double-overtime game against Oregon and a last-second cover by Villanova in Week 3.
Overall, with Penn State relegated to its backup quarterback, I expect an overwhelming Ohio State victory in a score around 28-7.
Penn State vs Ohio State, Last Five Matchups
Ohio State has a lifetime 25-14 record against Penn State, with one vacated victory. The Big Ten rivals had split the first 26 non-vacated matchups, but Ohio State has dominated since, winning 12 of the last 13 games, including each of the last eight. This will be the first matchup with either team unranked since an unranked Penn State shocked No.2 Ohio State in 2016.
Last season, Penn State jumped out to a 10-0 lead within 10 minutes before Ohio State answered with two touchdowns to take the lead by halftime. In the second half, Ohio State sandwiched a Penn State field goal with two of its own to close out a 20-13 win.
Future Pittsburgh Steeler Will Howard threw two touchdowns in the win. On the Penn State side, Tyler Warren had seven touches for 94 yards.
In terms of returning talent, Jeremiah Smith caught four passes for 55 yards, and Penn State’s duo of Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton were held to 42 yards on 18 combined carries.
