Florida State shocked the world by beating Alabama as a 13.5-point underdog in Week 1. Since then, quarterback Tommy Castellanos and the Seminoles have cooled down. They beat East Texas A&M and Kent State by a large margin, but then lost to Virginia and Miami the following two weeks.

They lost in overtime to Virginia on the road and then lost by six points to Miami at home. The final score is generous to Florida State in that one, as the Seminoles were down 28-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

Castellanos has been electric, but he has struggled with turning the ball over. He has thrown two interceptions in each of his last two games.

The offense has been able to move the ball at will, however, averaging 46.8 points and 560.8 yards per game.

Florida State should see success through the air against Pittsburgh’s defense, which gives up 241.3 passing yards per game.

The Seminoles will have to beat Pitt with their passing attack because Pitt is first in the ACC against the run, allowing just 66 yards per game on the ground.

Pitt will be starting freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel, who played well against Boston College last week. He completed 73.3% of his passes and threw for 323 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. Florida State’s defense and pass rush is an obvious step-up over BC, but the Panthers can move the ball and keep up with Florida State’s offense.

They have scored 41 points per game and are averaging 423 yards per game this season.

I am picking the underdog in this game despite the freshman quarterback going on the road. Heintschel just needs to do enough on offense to keep Pitt in this game. They have the playmakers around him, like wide receiver Raphael Williams, to make him successful.

Florida State is the better team, but I cannot trust them in this game. They are struggling and continue to turn the ball over. If that trend continues, the Panthers should be able to keep this game close and could potentially pull off the outright upset.

I believe the Seminoles will struggle to run the ball in this one, and while Pitt’s secondary is worrisome, their offense has the tools to keep up with Florida State. Take the Panthers to cover the 10.5 points on Saturday.
