- The Washington Nationals have struggled to play .500 baseball this season
- However, the defending World Series champs are dominating against the New York Mets.
- Will that continue on Thursday afternoon when Aaron Voth takes on Mets rooke David Peterson at Citi Field?
History is repeating itself for the 6-7 Washington Nationals . This year, though, time is not on their side.
Washington began last season in a 19-31 funk before bouncing back with a torrid second half, which earned them a National League wildcard spot and, eventually, a World Series.
As they struggle to play .500 baseball in 2020, perhaps the solution to what ails the Nats will be on the diamond right in front of them during Thursday’s 1:00 pm ET start.
More games with the New York Mets would certainly help Washington’s cause. Entering play Wednesday, the Nationals were 3-1 against the Mets and 3-6 against all other opponents.
Despite this, Washington is the +105 underdog Thursday in the Nationals vs Mets odds when they hand the ball to Aaron Voth to take on Mets rookie David Peterson.
Nationals vs Mets August 13 Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total Odds at DraftKings |
---|---|---|---|
Washington Nationals | +105 | +1.5 (-200) | O 9.0 (-112) |
New York Mets | -121 | -1.5 (+165) | U 9.0 (-109) |
Odds as of Aug. 12.
Bottom dwellers in the NL East, the Mets won just three of their first 10 home games.
A Nationals Disgrace
Last year, the Mets were the one team that was able to get one over on Washington. New York’s NL East squad went 12-7 against the Nationals. They were the only club to reach double digits in victories against the World Series champions.
So far this season, the script has flipped. Washington is having its way with the Mets.
Offense moved the ball well. Defense kept 'em outta the end zone. But we're gonna have to talk to the O-line about allowing those two safeties.

Monday, the Nationals scored 16 runs while beating the Mets. That output tied for the third-most runs the team has scored in a road game since relocating the Montreal Expos to Washington in 2005.
It is also marked the fourth time since the start of the 2017 season that the Nats have scored 15 or more runs in a game against the Mets.
The following night, former Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer held the Mets in check during a 2-1 victory. New York went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Mets are the MLB leader in runners left on base at 8.35 per game.
Familiar Surroundings
New York can be an intimidating place for a visiting player. However, there should be a level of comfort for Nationals starter Austin Voth. He made his MLB debut at Citi Field on July 14, 2018.

Still looking for his first win of the season, Voth (0-1) nonetheless displays solid numbers. His ERA is 1.78. He pitched five scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles in his last outing, striking out five.

Voth won a camp battle with Erick Fedde to earn the fifth starter role in Washington’s rotation.
Starting Motivation
Already without Noah Syndergaard (Tommy John surgery), an injury to Michael Wacha and Marcus Stroman’s decision to opt out have further depleted New York’s starting rotation. Lefty David Peterson is among the arms seeking to stake a claim to a spot among the starting five. Outside of Jacob deGrom, Peterson has been New York’s best starter.

New York’s 2107 first-round draft pick, Peterson was viewed as a middling prospect entering the season. He’d never previously pitched above AA ball.
Day Traders
Washington’s offense fires on all cylinders during day games. The Nats are batting an NL-best .284 in the daylight.
