UFC Fight Night Predictions & Odds: Garcia vs Onama Picks

As if there aren’t enough sports already to sweat this weekend, we also have a UFC Fight Night card worthy of our attention. The event is headlined by the featherweight bout between Steve Garcia and David Onama, with both fighters bringing multi-fight winning streaks into the Octacon.

The prelims are set to get underway from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas at 1:45 pm PT / 4:15 pm ET on Saturday, with the Main Card fights starting at 4:15 pm PT / 7:15 pm ET on ESPN+.

Here are my UFC Fight Night predictions for my favorite fights on the card.

Garcia vs Onama Prediction

Let’s start with the headliner, which should be a banger of a fight. Both Garcia and Onama are looking to spend as much time as possible on their feet, a strategy that is ultimately going to favor Garcia.

Tale of the Tape

The 33-year-old has a size and reach advantage over his opponent, and boasts significantly more power. 14 of his 18 victories have ended by KO/TKO, and he’s knocked out five opponents during his six-match winning streak. Garcia has promised fight fans an all-out war, and Onama wants to oblige.

The problem is, Onama doesn’t have the defense to sustain that style of fight. Yes, he’s riding a four-match win streak of his own, but his striking defense is worse than Garcia’s. Onama absorbs nearly twice as many blows as his opponent per minute, and will eventually try to take this fight to the mat.

Unfortunately, Onama’s takedown accuracy is poor, while Garica’s takedown defense sits at 88%. I expect Garcia to control the fight on his feet, and prevent Onama from taking him down. From there, I’ll take the bigger, more powerful striker with the better defense.

Cortes-Acosta vs Delija Prediction

Moving over to the heavyweight division, where the love has gone too far for Ante Delija. The Croatian opened as a slight underdog, but has been into favorite status over Waldo Cortes-Acosta. I get the reasoning, Cortes-Acosta hasn’t exactly beaten a murderer’s row of fighters en route to a 7-2 record. However, he’s never been stopped and can wear down Delija over the course of three rounds.

Delija is very upfront with how he wants to fight. He keeps moving forward, throwing haymakers until either he or his opponent falls. So far, it’s been a successful strategy, but his conditioning is suspect and his takedown defense is literally a zero.

I’m betting Cortes-Acosta can stay out of the way of Delija’s hands, and get him down to the ground. He’s a better grappler than his opponent, and can deploy a similar wrestling-heavy strategy to what he used to beat Robelis Despaigne.

Wells vs Gorimbo Prediction

For my last pick, I’m going chalk with Themba Gorimbo. Neither he or his opponent Jeremiah Wells have tasted much success lately, with the ladder last winning in 2023. Wells does have exceptional athleticism, but he’s far from a polished fighter.

Gorimbo on the other hand, fights at an all-out, frantic pace. That can backfire against someone with quick finishing ability, but Wells hasn’t displayed that skill in quite some time.

Gorimbo can beat you on his feet or on the mat, and will eventually wear down Wells. He’ll outwrestle him and throw more punches, either finishing Wells or earning a convincing decision.
