WSH Commanders vs KC Chiefs Injury Reports
Washington only has four players on the injury report, but three are critical to the team’s success. Jayden Daniels will miss his third game of the year. He has been productive in his second season, throwing eight touchdowns and one interception en route to a 97.7 passer rating.
Without Daniels in the lineup, the Commanders will turn to veteran Marcus Mariota for the third time this season. In starts, Mariota led the Commanders to a win over the Raiders and a loss to the Falcons. So far, he has four total touchdowns and one interception. In many ways, he is a toned down version of Daniels, so Washington can largely run the same offense.
On defense, Daron Payne is questionable with a toe injury. Payne has been an iron man for the Commanders, missing just one game out of 123 career games. He has been a solid contributor on the interior this season, notching 26 total tackles, including five tackles for loss, a sack, and a safety. Without Payne, the Commanders would rely on the trio of Javon Kinlaw, Eddie Golman, and Jer’Zhan Newton.
Colson Yankoff will miss his first game of the season. He has played 73% of Washington’s special teams snaps so far.
The more critical special teams injury is that of Matt Gay. Gay has been effective this season within 50 yards, making six of seven field goals and all 18 of his extra points. His 50-plus-yard efforts have been less consistent as he is just four-of-seven. The Commanders do not currently have another kicker on their roster or practice squad, likely boding well for Gay’s availability.
The Chiefs only have two players on the injury report, but they are two key pieces on the offensive line. Rookie left tackle Josh Simmons is out for personal reasons. Free agent acquisition Jaylon Moore is set to start in his place.
At right guard, Trey Smith is doubtful to go. If he is unable to suit up, Mike Caliendo is next on the depth chart along the interior. The 2024 Pro Bowler would be a huge missing piece for the reigning AFC champs.
