The Jets are on the brink of elimination tonight as they host the Stars in a pivotal Game 5 showdown. Dallas leads the best-of-seven series 3-1 in the NHL playoff bracket, but online sportsbooks are expecting Winnipeg to push this to a Game 6 at the very least. I agree, as the Jets have posted better puck possession numbers and expected goals than their opponent so far.

• Winnipeg Jets Moneyline (-125)

On the scoresheet, Winnipeg was outplayed in Dallas dropping Games 3 and 4 by a combined score of 8-3. A closer look at the advanced numbers, however, tell different story.

Game 3 was the most evenly played contest all series from a puck possession standpoint, with the Stars holding the advantage in scoring chances and expected goals. The Jets absolutely dominated Game 4 though, holding a major advantage in Corsi For (60.44 vs 39.56), expected goals (2.35 vs 1.78) and shots on goal (32 vs 24).

The Stars Jake Oettinger stood on his head to secure a series stranglehold, but there’s lots of positives for Winnipeg to take home. For the series, The Jets hold the advantage in corsi for, expected goals and high dangers chances. The biggest differences have been the play in net, and Winnipeg’s inability to capitalize with the man advantage.

Once again, the Jets will need more from Connor Hellebuyck. He underwhelmed in Games 3 and 4, but was very good in the series first two games. The Vezina trophy odds contender allowed only three goals on 45 shots, shutting out the Stanley Cup odds favorites in Game 2. Winnipeg was sensational in the regular season at home, allowing fewer than 2 goals per game.

As for the powerplay struggles, it’s not due to a lack of opportunity. The Jets are just 1-for-15 in the series, and are 0-for-11 converting high danger pp chances. That’s bound to regress back in their favor, and I’m betting that happens tonight.

Another positive Winnipeg can take from Game 4 is they held Mikko Rantanen without a shot for the first time all playoffs. Rantanen leads the postseason in scoring with 19 points, and is a heavy favorite to win the Conn Smythe. Shutting him down again will be key in Game 5, and I predict the Jets will do so en route to keeping their season alive.

I’m betting Winnipeg on the moneyline tonight, with the best odds currently available from Caesars at -125. Dallas comes back as a +105 underdog, while the total sits at 5.5.
