  • The US Open tees off June 13th from famed Pebble Beach
  • Jordan Spieth has played well recently seeing his odds drop
  • Who is the best bet to win the third major of the year?

After a tumultuous start to the season which saw Jordan Spieth fail to post a top-20 finish in his first 13 events, the three-time major champ has rediscovered his game and has seen his US Open odds drop to the point where he is now a top five contender.

With three straight top-8 finishes, is the 25-year old worth wagering on now that he’s back to playing top notch golf, or is there better value out there?

Jordan Spieth Back to Being Jordan Spieth

It seemed unfathomable after his scintillating victory at the 2017 Open Championship that Jordan Spieth would go nearly two years without tasting victory afterwards – but that’s where he’s at.

He’s rediscovered his magic and game and was in contention in his last three tournaments. His average odds have gone from 21-1 on April 15th to 14-1 now.

If there’s criticism for Spieth it’s that his weekend scoring, specifically his Sunday rounds, have been less than stellar. He ranks 201st in Final Round scoring average with only one of his twelve rounds in the 60’s.

Jordan Spieth’s Strokes Gained Ranks This Season

Strokes Gained Stats Ranking
Putting 5th
Around the Green 34th
Total Strokes Gained 61st
Approach the Green 143rd
Tee to Green 147th
Off the Tee 186th

Spieth has been much better of late, specifically finishing third at the PGA Championship three weeks ago, and was first in scrambling at the Memorial with much improved play off the tee and approaching the green.

2016 T-37th

Keep in mind, the Open is at Pebble Beach, where Spieth won the 2017 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, so he has played well at this venue. In his two attempts since, however, Spieth has been 20th and 45th.

Given that he hasn’t won in nearly two years and has still been struggling on Sundays, I’d be inclined to resist placing a wager on Spieth to bag his fourth career major. His incredible putting will mask many of the deficiencies he’s had most of the season, but I need more of a sample size with the rest of his game to put total faith in him.

The Best Value Bet to Win 2019 US Open

The odds simply aren’t in bettors’ favor (+550), but you’d be absolutely playing with fire assuming that Brooks Koepka can’t continue his demolition through major championships, having nabbed four of his last eight he’s competed in. Willie Anderson’s record as the only golfer ever to win three straight US Opens (1903-05) is in serious jeopardy with Koepka showing no signs of letting up anytime soon.
