- The US Open tees off June 13th from famed Pebble Beach
- Memorial Tournament Champion Patrick Cantlay is now a strong contender to win US Open
- Who is the best long shot to win the third major of the year?
After years of injuries hampering his ability to play golf, former amateur world no. 1 Patrick Cantlay is finally flashing the immense talent he’s always possessed en route to capturing last week’s Memorial Tournament.
With that victory and a string of solid performances preceding that, Cantlay has seen his US Open Odds drop from 66-1 in the middle of May to 18-1. Is he worth wagering on at that price?

Patrick Cantlay is a Force to Be Reckoned With
Patrick Cantlay put on a dizzying display last Sunday at the Memorial Tournament, charging past leader Martin Kaymer with a sizzling 64 to claim his second career PGA Tour title.
This young man got a handshake and a hug! 😁
Been rooting for #PatrickCantlay since he won the Nicklaus Award in 2011. Might be first to come to me and ask how to play Muirfield Village GC. So happy for his @MemorialGolf win!@GolfCoachesAssn @PGATOUR@Nationwide @nationwidekids pic.twitter.com/I12EMn4hTE— Jack Nicklaus (@jacknicklaus) June 2, 2019
The last few seasons Cantlay has been showcasing his outstanding skills that once saw him shoot 60 on the PGA Tour as an amateur. That he won his second tour title is astonishing because years ago it would’ve been assumed he’d have plenty more by now, had his career not been derailed by personal hardships and injuries.
Patrick Cantlay.
◾2011: No. 1 in amateur ranks
◾2011: First amateur to shoot 60 on TOUR
◾2011: Wins Nicklaus Award
◾2013: Wins on @WebDotComTour
◾2013: Stress fracture in back
◾2014: 6 starts in 3 years (Injury)
◾2017: Wins @ShrinersOpen
◾2019: Wins @MemorialGolf pic.twitter.com/jnT5rUFwru— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 3, 2019
That victory at Jack Nicklaus’ event was brewing as he’d put together a string of great performances this year which saw him contention at both the Masters and PGA Championship.
Patrick Cantlay’s Best Finishes This Season
Tournament | Result |
---|---|
Memorial Tournament | WIN |
Shriners Hospitals For Children Open | 2nd |
PGA Championship | T-3rd |
RBC Heritage | T-3rd |
WGC-Mexico Championship | T-6th |
WGC-HSBC Champions | T-7th |
The Masters | T-9th |
Cantlay has no weaknesses in his game whatsoever, which should serve him well at the US Open at Pebble Beach next week. When your worst statistic in the main six strokes gained categories is 29th, you know you’re a heck of a player that should be strongly considered every time you tee it up.
Patrick Cantlay’s Strokes Gained Ranks This Season
Strokes Gained Stats | Ranking |
---|---|
Tee to Green | 2nd |
Total Strokes Gained | 3rd |
Approach the Green | 9th |
Around the Green | 12th |
Off the Tee | 13th |
Putting | 29th |
There’s a reason his odds have dropped all the way to 18-1, and if you snagged him last month at 66-1 you’re sitting pretty now. Betting Cantlay for the US Open is strongly advised as it’ll be almost unfathomable to imagine him not being in contention come Sunday now that he has the confidence to close out a tournament.
The Best Longshot Pick to Win 2019 US Open
Not often can a golfer lead the FedEx Cup points list and be totally under the radar, particularly after two victories this season. Matt Kuchar fits that bill however, and at 50-1 he has tremendous value. In addition to those two victories he’s posted a pair of runner-ups this year and has had respectable 8th and 12th place finishes at the PGA Championship and Masters.
