Two teams that let leads get away late in their games Saturday face off as LSU visits #10 Alabama at 7 pm EST on Wednesday at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa.

Visiting Texas Tech scored the last 12 points to beat LSU 76-71 and cover the 3.5-point spread. In another SEC/Big 12 Challenge game, Alabama did not make a field goal in the final four minutes as it lost at Oklahoma 66-61 as a 3.5-point favorite, ending its 10-game winning streak.

LSU (11-5 overall, 6-3 in the SEC) has lost three of its last four games straight up and four of its last five against the spread. Alabama (14-4, 9-0) has lost two of its last three ATS but is a sizeable favorite in this one.

LSU Lets One Get Away

Junior guard Javonte Smart scored 29 points to tie a career-high, but it was not enough to keep LSU from holding off Texas Tech. Smart made 12 of 18 shots and raised his season scoring average to 15.5 points a game.

Despite making just six of 20 field goal attempts, freshman guard Cameron Thomas had 25 points. He missed two shots in the last 25 seconds, including a potential game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left.

Thomas continues to be one of the nation’s top freshmen. He is averaging 22.3 points while accounting for 35.5% of its shots and drawing 7.0 fouls per 40 minutes. Thomas is making 89.5% of his free throws.

LSU got some bad news when junior forward Darius Days left the game in the second half with a sprained knee. The injury is expected to sideline him for at least two weeks.

Days had 11 points and nine rebounds. He is averaging 12.1 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 55.8% overall and 41.2% on 3-point attempts.

Days is also a decent troller.

LSU will need more from sophomore forward Trendon Watford than the season-low 4 points he provided Saturday. Watford is having a fine season, though, with averages of 17.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

‘Bama Looks to Bounce Back

Alabama had not lost since Dec. 19 before falling in Norman. Oklahoma scored 7 of the game’s last 8 points to knock off the Crimson Tide.

Senior forward Alex Reese was the surprise scoring leader for Alabama with 15 points. It marked his season high and was just the third time Reese reached double figures this season.

 

Senior guard John Petty Jr. was held to nine points. Petty made just two of seven 3-point tries. Petty leads Alabama in scoring at 13.6 points a game and is averaging 5.0 rebounds.

Jaden Shackelford is averaging 12.9 points while senior wing Herbert Jones has a 12.6 mark and sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly is at 11.2. Jones is pulling down 5.9 rebounds a game and Quinerly is dishing 3.1 assists a game.

Alabama Blow Out

These teams met two weeks ago. Alabama rolled to a 105-75 road win in that one as a 1-point favorite, while setting an SEC record by making 23 three-pointers.

Petty connected on eight of 10 shots from long range while finishing with 24 points in a game in which Alabama raced to a 23-4 lead. Guard Joshua Primo scored 22 points on six-of-eight from beyond the arc.

Quinerly also scored 22 points in 20 minutes off the bench. Jones added 13 points and five assists.

Thomas led LSU with 21 points. Smart chipped in with 12 points and Watford had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The rematch features an LSU team that is sixth in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency according to KenPom.com against an Alabama team seventh in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Alabama has proven it can beat LSU with overwhelming offense and it has the defense to take care of the Tigers again.
