Tuesday, December 21st brings an intriguing La Liga Matchday 4 fixture between two of Spain’s most high-profile clubs as Sevilla welcomes Barcelona to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The kick-off is set for 3:30 PM EST. This game was initially supposed to be on September 12th, but due to the lack of players available from the international break, it was rescheduled.
Los Merengues beat reigning champions Atletico Madrid over the weekend in a 2-1 thriller. As for the Catalan outfit, they took down Elche 3-2 thanks to a late winner from youngster Nico Gonzalez.

Barcelona won two out of three matches against Sevilla last season, with a pair of victories coming in the Copa del Rey where the Blaugrana overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to secure a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture in March.
Sevilla Looking Like Real Deal
Although it’s still early in the campaign, Julen Lopetegui’s men are looking very impressive. They currently have an 11-4-2 record which is good for runner-up in the La Liga table at the moment. Sevilla also hasn’t tasted defeat on home soil in 2021/22, collecting 22 of a possible 24 points in the process.

With the Andalusian club failing to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, the side will now fall into Europa. However, their focus will likely be on Spain, where a title run is certainly not out of the question. To be the best you have to beat the best and Sevilla did just that on Saturday, taking down current holders, Atletico.
Former Barca man Ivan Rakitic got them started on the right foot in just the seventh minute when he thumped the back of the net with a smashing strike from distance. Atleti did respond before the halftime whistle though as Felipe equalized, but Lucas Ocampos produced the goods just before injury time as he fired home a volley past Jan Oblak to give Sevilla a dramatic three points.

Although Diego Simeone’s squad had more opportunities in the final third, it was a very stable performance from the hosts. In fact, Sevilla’s backline has shown fantastic consistency all term, conceding a mere 12 goals in 17 games.
Work in Progress for Barcelona
The Catalan giants are undoubtedly in a much different era right now. No Lionel Messi, their older players don’t possess the same quality as the past, and they’re in unfamiliar territory in the table. Instead, the youth movement is in full effect at Camp Nou. Xavi hasn’t had the smoothest start to life as the new boss of his former club, collecting just 11 of a potential 21 points across all competitions.

However, domestically, the Spaniard has guided Barca to three wins out of five, losing just once during that span to Real Betis earlier this month. While the Blaugrana hasn’t exactly been convincing in any of these fixtures, results are starting to happen. Elche was by no means an easy opposition, but Barcelona pulled through.
Ferran Jutgla and Gavi put their side two goals to the good within the first 20 minutes, but the Catalans’ shaky backline collapsed in the second half, allowing Elche to bag two goals within just a minute of each other. Thankfully, substitute Nico Gonzalez came to the rescue for Xavi’s squad, clinically putting away a fine strike into the top-left corner just before stoppage time.

While sitting in eighth spot looks terrible for a club like Barca, they’re only three points off the top-four. A victory on Tuesday would put them level on points with Rayo Vallecano, who currently holds the final UCL spot.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Prediction
Historically, the visitors have absolutely dominated this fixture, winning 20 of the last 28 against Sevilla. However, this is a much different Barcelona side this season and the hosts are thriving on home soil, going unbeaten in ten at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Especially after such a thrilling victory over Atletico, I have to take Sevilla here.
