As the Troy Trojans (10-2) and Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (9-2, 4-6-1 ATS) are preparing to square off for Sun Belt Conference Championship, the biggest question everyone is posing concerns the health and welfare of Chanticleers QB1 Grayson McCall. He’s been missing the past two games with a foot injury.

Is he playing in the title game? The Chanticleers aren’t saying for sure. Troy head coach Jon Sumrall is taking the approach to be assuming that McCall will be playing. Oddsmakers, though, appear to be leaning in the other direction.

A two-time Sun Belt Player of the Year, McCall has been out since suffering his foot injury on November 3 against Appalachian State. In his absence, the Chanticleers squeaked past Southern Mississippi 26-23 and were hammered 47-7 by James Madison.

This season, redshirt junior McCall is showing a 68.1% completion percentage. He’s thrown for 2,314 yards and 21 touchdowns against one interception.

In his absence, Jarrett Guest and Bryce Carpenter are handling duties under center. Guest has logged the most playing time. In two games, he’s completed 17-of-37 for 262 yards and one TD.

The injury is being described as requiring a four-to-six-week healing process. It’s been four weeks since McCall was hurt.

Trojans Unbeaten In Nine Games

West Division winners Troy have won nine in a row in Sumrall’s first season as head coach. The Trojans are unbeaten since losing a heartbreaker to Appalachian State on a last-play Hail Mary pass.

While Coastal Carolina was losing to James Madison, the Trojans were rallying with 34 unanswered points and beating Arkansas State 48-19 to lock up the home-field advantage for the title game. Running back Kimani Vidal went over 200 yards rushing for the second straight game. He finished with 208 yards on the ground and four TDs. the week prior in a 34-26 win over Louisiana-Monroe, Vidal was rambling for 244 yards and two TDs.

Troy’s defense was exerting dominance in that game. They were producing seven tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions by Reddy Stewart, one of them a pick six. Returning from injury, linebacker Carlton Martial was collecting six tackles, bringing his FBS-record career total to 554.

Over the last three seasons, the Chanticleers are 31-5 SU. However, they’re 1-4 ATS in their last five against Troy. The spread on his game grew from an opening line of Trojans -4.5 due to the uncertainty over McCall’s status.

This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. Straight up, Coastal Carolina has won three in a row. The Chanticleers are owners of a 3-2 SU edge in the all-time series. The over was the winning play on the total in all five games between Troy and Coastal Carolina.
