  • The San Diego State Aztecs are 5.5-point favorites over the Colorado State Rams in Friday night college football action
  • Both teams rank in the Top 5 in scoring defense in the Mountain West Conference

It’s a Mountain West Conference kickoff for both the Colorado State Rams (1-3, 2-2-0 ATS) and San Diego State Aztecs (3-1, 3-1-0 ATS) Friday night.

It’s been a rough go for the Rams, who’ve dropped three of their first four, likely why the books have the 3-1 Aztecs as the home favorite in the college football odds.

Action gets underway at 10:30pm ET from Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, with CBS Sports Network providing the play-by-play.

San Diego State has yet to allow a point in two home games this year, and are pegged as 5.5-point home favorites and a short -190 on the moneyline against Colorado State, who are +155 underdogs on the moneyline.

The total sits at 41.5 points, as these break-even offenses and tough defenses have helped both schools to a 3-1-0 Under record through the first four games of the season.

Rams Struggle to Find Offense

Colorado State is the second-lowest scoring team in the Mountain West, averaging just 15.3 points per game, an average that was brought down after getting drubbed 20-3 against Washington State.

A change at quarterback from Brayden Fowler Nicolosi to Jackson Brouseau did create a season high in passing yards (188), but still produced the lowest scoring output of the season.

To date, their lone win is against FCS-level Northern Colorado, a team they were favoured to beat by 34.5 points, and snuck away with a 21-17 win.

The Rams rank inside the bottom four in both passing and rushing, and that doesn’t pair well with the Mountain West’s stingiest defense, as the Aztecs are first in rush and pass yards allowed.

Aztecs Need to Better Support Defense

San Diego State barely escaped with a win last game against Northern Illinois, in a game where they held the Huskies to a field goal in a 6-3 win.

Like the Rams, there aren’t many great things that the Aztecs do on offense. They’re eighth in the 12-team conference, scoring 23.8 points per game, but they’re 10th in rushing and 11th in passing.

Even in their highest-scoring game against a Division I opponent, SDSU ripped the Cal Golden Bears 34-0, but the defense scored a pair of touchdowns to match the offense.

QB Jayden Denegal has thrown for under 200 yards in three straight games and hasn’t thrown for more than 207 yards in a game this season.

Colorado State vs San Diego State Prediction

Pick: Under 41.5 points (-115 at BetMGM)

I’m picking the Under for my Colorado vs State prediction, which actually presents better value than when I locked in my bet earlier in the day. I’m not buying the upward line movement.

Look, the defenses can upset this pick with a couple of scores, but there’s just not enough evidence that these offenses will be able to put up points against what are both relevant defenses.

Colorado State’s defensive weakness is against the run, where they allow 169 yards per game, second-worst in Mountain West, but the Aztecs might not be able to take full advantage.

The Rams are also right behind SDSU in passing defense, and the two schools have allowed seven passing TDs in the eight games they’ve played collectively.

None of the last three games for either team have seen the total reach 40 points, setting the stage for a rockfight under the lights. Bet the Under for Friday night football and check out our Friday College Football Picks for more action.
