It looks to be a major mismatch between American Conference foes when the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-4, 0-3 American) visit the East Carolina Pirates (3-3, 1-1 American).

Action gets underway Thursday at 7:30pm ET from Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, NC. ESPN will carry the broadcast. East Carolina’s win last year was the first time in the last five meetings between these schools.

I’m going to target the total here, as the Golden Hurricane are the second-lowest scoring team in the American Conference, putting up just 18.7 points per game. They have cracked the 20-point plateau just once over the last five games,.

Not surprising, then, that they have been the anchor when cashing the Under, which has gone 4-1-0, including the last three in a row.

East Carolina is not the get-right opponent, as they currently own the conference’s top scoring defense, allowing just 15.5 points per game. They’re especially stingy against the run, allowing just 114.2 yards per game (2nd).

But the Pirates haven’t been running up scores as the competition leveled up. They have been held Under 20 points themselves in two of their last three games. Their last four games have finished with an Under, failing to crack the 47.5 points.

For all their struggles offensively, Tulsa brings a decent defense to the table, ranking fifth against the pass at 203.7 yards per game and rank middle of the pack in points allowed at 26.3.

I’m not sure if East Carolina’s Bottom-4 rush attack will take advantage of Tulsa’s Bottom-4 run defense either.

I think the Pirates win easy, but in a controlled and not close to blowout fashion.

As of early Thursday morning, the books had yet to release a full range of player props, but we like the anytime TD scorer props for this matchup.

ECU QB Katin Houser leads East Carolina’s rushing attack with three endzone trips this season. They’ve all come in the last three games, as he’s on a nice scoring run.

He’s is in great position to make it a fourth straight Thursday, though: Tulsa’s 14 rushing TD’s allowed is tied for second most in the conference.

Anthony Smith’s numbers have dipped since getting into a meatier part of the schedule, pulling down just seven catches over the last three games, while he had at least six in each of ECU’s first three contests.

But Tulsa isn’t exactly a powerhouse, and I like him to get score his second major in the last three games.

There’s not a ton of offense going on with the Golden Hurricane, but tight end Brody Foley is usually in the middle of it.

He leads Tulsa with three TD catches, and nine of his 12 receptions on the year have been on the road. He should be a featured part of the Tulsa passing game.

The Golden Hurricane are monster 17.5-point road underdogs, and a distant +550 for anyone wanting to take an outright upset. East Carolina is a massive -800 favorite on the moneyline, and the total checks in at 53.5 points.
