It’s an SEC biggie Saturday, which should vault the winner into the upper circles of the College Football Playoff mix, as the 9th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 SEC), host the 5th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels (6-0, 3-0 SEC).

Ole Miss has yet to lose a game this season, and are tied atop the SEC with Texas A&M with 6-0 records and 3-0 conference marks. Still, the books have some doubts, pegging the Rebels are significant road underdogs in the college football odds.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30pm ET from Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA, with ABC providing the broadcast coverage.

About the only blip in Ole Miss’ current run was not beating up on the Washington State Cougars enough last game, winning 24-21 despite being massive 33-point favorites.

We can consider that a letdown game, especially after Ole Miss was coming off its biggest win of the year, knocking off the no. 4 LSU Tigers 24-19.

The Rebels are a Top 4 scoring team in the SEC at 37.8 points per game, but they aren’t in the business of blowing out teams. In fact, four of their six wins (three against conference opponents) have been settled by seven points or less.

Ole Miss creates problems with an offensive attack that can puncture defenses with variety, as they rank second in the conference in passing, at 311 yards per game. But they’re also potent on the ground, ringing up 204.3 yards per game, a Top-5 mark in the conference.

The Rebels, Tennessee and Arkansas are the only schools that can lay claim to Top 5 status in both categories

Georgia has been the dominant program of the last few years, though they’re not at that runaway level currently. Still, they have that level of pedigree that has them competitive and just a generally tough out.

They can hang with any heavies, and in any style. They dropped then 15th-ranked Tennessee 44-41 in overtime, and went toe-to-toe with Alabama (then 17th) in a 24-21 loss.

Most recently, they went into Auburn and gutted out a tough 20-10 win to improve to 3-1 in conference play.

Wins over Kentucky and Auburn by double digits might have overshadowed the fact that the margin of victory and defeat in games vs ranked teams has been three points.

I’m not sure if the Bulldogs have the offense to pull away from the Rebels. They’re 11th in passing in the SEC, with just seven TD tosses on the year. Ole Miss should have an advantage there, as they allow just 180 pass yards per contest, and six scores on the season.

Though Ole Miss hasn’t won in Athens since 1996, and their big-game experience is inferior to the Bulldogs, they have the roster to compete and keep things in range, if not a chance to win outright.

Ole Miss vs Georgia Updated Odds

On the eve of this mega-matchup, the spread has moved as low as 6.5 points, after dabbling mostly in the 7.0-7.5 point range for the week.

The total is all over the map, and it’s buyer preference and book choice. You can find this line as low as 55.5 points, which is what you’ll want to wager for the Under. Conversely, Under bettors can find the total as high as 57.5 points.
