The second last official tournament on the 2021 PGA Tour calendar heads to Houston, Texas for the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open. Carlos Ortiz, who finished runner-up last week, is the defending champion, having bested Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama by two strokes last season.
This is just the second year that Memorial Park Golf Course has been used, as it was renovated in 2020 with input from Brooks Koepka. He, Tyrrell Hatton, and tournament favorite Sam Burns are the only three golfers in the top-20 of the world rankings teeing it up.
Expect a tight battle come Sunday evening, at least historically, with all but one Houston Open since 2012 being won by two shots or fewer. In the first year being played at this venue, the winning score was 13-under-par, so it provided a solid challenge for the world’s best.

Carlos Ortiz Defends His Title
Winning a PGA Tour event is difficult enough – defending that title is extremely difficult. If 2020 Houston Open champion Carlos Ortiz needs inspiration in that regard, he can look directly at last week’s winner Viktor Hovland, who successfully won back-to-back titles in Mexico. Ortiz was the runner-up, as he was second in putts per green in regulation and also second in birdies.
What a crazy good save and exciting, long putt in front of the home crowd for Carlos Ortiz.
His 2nd RU finish at Mayakoba. His 4th top-10 here.

Unsurprisingly, Ortiz was fantastic in all facets en-route to his maiden PGA Tour title last year in Houston, which came after he was T-4th at this tournament in 2019. He was first in scrambling and fifth in strokes gained tee-to-green along with putting.
He boasts +3500 odds to win outright this go around, and considering he won it in 2020 and is coming off an event where only one golfer bested him, you’re getting him at solid value.

2021 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open Best Value Picks
- Maverick McNealy (+4500): In the early portion of the campaign, Maverick McNealy has already posted three top-25 finishes in five starts, including a runner-up at the Fortinet Championship and a T-11 last weekend in Mexico. Last year at this course, he had a respectable T-20 showing as he led the field in ball striking.
- Mito Pereira (+8000): Though he’s cooled off since he was blazing hot following an automatic promotion to the PGA Tour, Mito Pereira has still been playing relatively well. In the last 24 rounds, the Chilean is first in strokes gained: tee-to-green and ball striking, and third in total strokes gained, and he was third at the Fortinet Championship to kick off the season.
- Jason Day (+10000): As far as longshots go, you can’t find one with more star power than Jason Day. Though he’s oft injured and hasn’t been good in his last three starts, he’d posted two top-15’s in the two starts prior to that. Last year, he was just one shot back at this track through 54 holes before settling for a T-7th result.
