With the AL Wild Card race heating up, the Seattle Mariners (80-65, 41-33 away) will be looking for a much-needed win on Monday, September 19, against the Los Angeles Angels (64-82, 34-40 home) after dropping the first three games of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:07 pm ET at Angel Stadium.
The M’s should feel confident with Logan Gilbert on the mound in the finale. LA, meanwhile, counters with Jose Suarez in Monday’s MLB lineups.

The Mariners are a -145 favorite in the rubber match. Seattle had won four in a row against the Angels before these last three losses over the weekend.

Seattle vs Los Angeles Probable Pitchers
Gilbert is a big reason that Seattle has one of the best pitching staffs in the Majors. The right-hander owns a 3.19 ERA and 12-6 record in 29 starts, striking out 156 batters in 166.2 innings while walking 43. Gilbert’s mid to high 90’s fastball is overpowering hitters and he’s managing to really command his stuff.
ERA of #Mariners SP’s over last month.
George Kirby – 1.33 (3rd in AL)
Logan Gilbert – 1.59 (5th)
Luis Castillo – 2.51 (16th)
Marco Gonzales – 2.63 (20th)
Robbie Ray – 3.03 (26th)M’s SP 2.25 ERA over last month is tops in MLB.
Yes, ERA isn’t an ideal stat. But this is good.

The 25-year-old is currently throwing the ball extremely well, too. He allowed a mere one run last time out against the Padres, tossing five innings and striking out five. In both outings before that, Gilbert didn’t surrender a single run. He’s already faced the Angels twice this season, posting a 3.86 ERA.
Gilbert vs Suarez
12-6 | Record | 6-7 |
3.19 | ERA | 3.84 |
166.2 | Innings Pitched | 91.1 |
156 | Strikeouts | 87 |
43 | BB | 29 |
Suarez is putting together a respectable campaign for the lowly Angels. The Venezuela native is 6-7 with a 3.84 ERA in 19 appearances and 17 starts. He’s only allowed 29 walks in 91.1 innings but Suarez does tend to get hit around at times. A good example was his previous outing against Cleveland.
José Suarez did not allow a run through four innings, but he gave up one in the fifth and two in the sixth. He was pulled after allowing two doubles and a HR in the sixth.
The #Angels are down 3-1.

The southpaw was tagged for nine hits and three runs in 5.1 frames, taking the loss in the process. On a more positive note, he’s had his way with the Mariners in 2022, compiling a 2.30 ERA in three appearances.
Seattle Needs a Win
The AL Wild Card is literally changing by the day. Seattle was in first not long ago, but three consecutive losses to the Angels are not helping their case. The Mariners still sit four games above the Baltimore Orioles, but they desperately need a victory on Monday.

The offense in particular has looked abysmal across the last two contests, scoring just two runs. Sunday was a 5-1 loss, with the M’s registering only six hits in total, giving Marco Gonzales zero run support. AL Rookie of the Year odds favorite Julio Rodriguez didn’t play though after missing another game with back tightness. Seattle needs him in the lineup.
Angels Playing Spoiler
There isn’t much going right for the Angels this year and with the playoffs well out of reach, they’ve played spoiler across the last few days. Saturday saw Shohei Ohtani throw an absolute gem as per usual and then on Sunday, the LA offense did some damage.

Luis Rengifo led the charge, going 2 for 4 with three RBI, while his infield partner Livan Soto drove in the other two runs including a home run, the first of his career after getting called up to the big leagues this weekend.

Mariners vs Angels Pick
Suarez is dealing against the Mariners this season, but I have a difficult time believing a team as good as Seattle won’t at least win one game in such an important series. With Gilbert on the mound, they’ll get it done. Take the visitors on the moneyline.
Pick: Mariners (-145)
