  • The AL East-leading New York Yankees meet the NL West-leading LA Dodgers on Sunday Night Baseball (June 1)
  • The Dodgers have outscored the Pinstripes 26-7 in the first two games of the series

Through the first two games of this heavyweight series, which features the top-two teams in the World Series odds, the Los Angeles Dodgers (36-22, 21-8 home, 34-24 O/U) have absolutely pummeled the New York Yankees (35-22, 17-13 away, 24-30-3 O/U), following-up an 8-5 win on Friday with an 18-2 embarrassment on Saturday. The Yankees will look to avoid the sweep when the teams meet on Sunday Night Baseball at 4:10 pm PT/7:10 pm ET, but it’s the Dodgers who are sizable favorites in the finale of the three-game set at Dodger Stadium.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will toe the rubber for the Dodgers while the Yankees counter with reliever-turned-starter Ryan Yarbrough, which isn’t an ideal situation for a team that used eight pitchers last night (though that did include second baseman Pablo Reyes in the eighth).

The good news for the Yankees is that the three longest outings of Yarbrough’s season have come in his last three games (all 5.0 innings or longer). The bad news is that Yamamoto is pitching so well that he’s become the second-favorite in the NL Cy Young odds.

There’s more bad news for the Pinstripes and it has to do with Yarbrough’s history against a few of the big bats in the Dodger lineup. The lefty has been absolutely massacred by Teoscar Hernandez (13-for-36 with seven home runs, two doubles, nine RBI, and a 1.395 OPS). Shohei Ohtani has an even higher OPS against Yarbrough (1.555) though it’s in a smaller sample size (4-for-10 with one home run and two doubles).

Kiki Hernandez has also found success against Yarbrough, going 5-for-11 with a double and a 1.045 OPS.

Altogether, the LA lineup has a .302 average and 1.104 OPS against the 33-year-old vet.

Yamamoto made two starts against the Yankees in his rookie season last year, and they were both sublime. On June 7, he pitched seven shutout innings while allowing just two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. In Game 2 of the 2024 World Series, he went 6.1 innings while allowing one run on one hit and two walks with four Ks.

The Yankees are batting .125 against the 26-year-old righty with a miniscule .327 OPS. Aaron Judge is the only current Yankee with an extra-base hit off Yamamoto (a double in the regular-season meeting). Juan Soto, now plying his trade in Queens with the Mets, homered off of Yamamoto in the World Series tilt.

Yankees vs Dodgers Picks & Prediction

  • Dodgers moneyline (-170) at Caesars
  • Teoscar Hernandez 1+ HR (+375) at ESPN Bet

The way Yamamoto is pitching, coupled with the way the Dodger lineup is pummeling the ball of late, I can’t go against the Dodgers at home on Sunday night. Only one team in the league (Mets) have a better home record and the Yankees have been considerably better in the Bronx (18-9) than on the road (17-13).

The history between Teoscar Hernandez and Ryan Yarbrough is also too hard to ignore. His home run prop is as short as +320 at Caesars but as long as +375 at ESPN. (BetMGM is the next-best option at +360.) He’s cranked seven home runs off Yarbrough in just 36 at-bats and has 10 dingers on the season.

He hasn’t homered in eight games and has just one homer in all of May but he just had an eight-game hit streak come to an end yesterday, so he’s seeing the ball well enough.
