The Cleveland Cavaliers (7-1, 3-1 away) will take their hot streak into Southern California on Sunday afternoon as they take on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers (2-6, 2-3 home) at Crypto.com Arena. The tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on NBA TV. Find the Cavaliers vs Lakers prediction below.
The Cavs are winners of seven in a row, last losing on Opening Night to the Toronto Raptors. They just blew out the Detroit Pistons on Friday, despite being without backcourt duo Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, who are nursing minor injuries. The Lakeshow meanwhile, fell to the Utah Jazz, their first loss at home.

The Cavs are a 3-point favorite for this matchup with moneyline odds of -148. The Lakers come back at +126 odds.
The Lakers have actually dominated the Cavaliers in recent memory, winning five straight dating back to the 2019-20 season.
Cavs Flying High
There was lots of hype around the Cavs heading into 2022-23 after swinging a blockbuster trade for Donovan Mitchell. So far, he and the rest of this team have completely lived up to expectations. Spida is playing at a ridiculously high level, averaging 31.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 43.8% from downtown. Friday’s win was the first game he’s missed.

Even with no Mitchell and Garland, Cleveland still managed to show just how deep their roster truly is. Jarrett Allen led the way with an impressive 23 points and seven rebounds, while Kevin Love also contributed in a big way, posting a stat line of 21 points, eight boards, and 10 dimes.

Six different players finished in double-figures and the Cavs especially killed Detroit inside, outscoring them 58-24 in the paint. Plus, they scored 28 points off the Pistons’ 18 turnovers. It’s unclear right now if Mitchell and Garland will play Sunday, but Cleveland should still have a chance at extending the unbeaten streak against a Lakers team who’ve only won twice.
Lakers Need a Win
Los Angeles captured back-to-back victories versus Denver and New Orleans, showing signs of life. Russell Westbrook is finding a home in the second unit, while Darvin Ham’s group is shooting the ball a mile better, too. But, the usual solid defense was nowhere to be seen Friday against Utah.

The Lakers ultimately lost 130-116 and the Jazz got whatever they wanted in this contest. That same focus on the opposite end of the floor was non-existent, with basically Utah’s entire first unit showing out. On a more positive note, Russ had arguably his best game of the campaign. The former MVP balled out for 26 points, three rebounds, and six assists, going 9 for 14 from the field.

LeBron had a relatively quiet night but Los Angeles still drained 42% of their triples. They were outscored 25-14 on second-chance points as well, a testament to the poor effort defensively. If the Lakers can bring it on both ends of the floor Sunday and the Cavs star duo is sidelined again, there’s a legitimate chance to grab a third win.
Cavaliers vs Lakers Prediction
Garland and Mitchell’s status is key here. If they suit up, Cavs spread is the pick. But if Cleveland is shorthanded, the Lakers moneyline offers value. Keep an eye out.
Pick: Cavs -3 (-110)
