NBA Western Conference Finalists Odds: Warriors vs Clippers Favored at +900

Naturally, the defending champion Golden State Warriors find themselves in the majority of the potential matchups with the shortest odds, while the LA Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Memphis Grizzlies and LA Lakers are also prominently featured.

The matchup with the shortest NBA odds is the Warriors versus the Clippers, with big things expected out of LAC with the impending return of Kawhi Leonard and the addition of John Wall.

Lots of Love for Warriors and Clippers

Let’s start with Golden State. Steph Curry is fresh off the greatest postseason of his career and has cemented himself as a top-10 player of all-time. Klay Thompson will be healthy from the start of the season for the first time in three years, while Draymond Green is as versatile as ever.

Throw in the emergence of Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole as legit scoring options and it’s going to tough to slow down the Warriors train.

Golden State will also be more dangerous down the middle, as 2020 number two overall pick James Wiseman should finally be able to contribute on a full-time basis.

Of course, the offense is elite, but don’t forget the Warriors ranked sixth in defensive rating last season. They’re a very deserving top-two contender in the NBA Championship odds.

On paper the Clippers appear stacked. A starting five that includes Paul George, Kawhi Leonard and John Wall has the chance to be extremely dynamic. The ceiling is high for them, but the floor is much lower than the West’s other top teams.

Leonard has long history of injuries and hasn’t played since tearing his ACL in the 2021 playoffs. George hasn’t played a full season since 2018-19 and was limited to 31 games in 2021-22. Wall, meanwhile, hasn’t played a full season since 2016-17, and hasn’t been on an NBA court since April 23, 2021.

Kawhi Leonard and Paul George were 32-11 in their last season together.

Injuries are impossible to predict, but this trio has a long track record of not being able to say healthy. If either Kawhi or George, and to a much lesser extent Wall, is injured the Clippers don’t have the depth to overcome it. I’d shy away from making them a primary target.

Western Conference Finalists Odds – Buy Suns and Grizzlies, Sell Lakers

The team I’d want to invest in the most at the top is Phoenix. After re-signing Deandre Ayton, the Suns are basically running back last season’s 64-win team. Considering they led the NBA in net rating, were third in defensive rating and fifth in offensive rating, that seems like a smart decision.

Another squad worth buying is Memphis. The Grizzlies gave Golden State all they could handle in the second round of the playoffs despite playing for half of the series without superstar Ja Morant.

Memphis finished second in the West last season behind Phoenix and was one of the few teams in the league to finish inside the top-10 in offensive and defensive rating. Desmond Bane is an ascending offensive talent, and the team just added a pair of first round picks from last month’s NBA Draft to their roster.

The outlook for the Lakers is not so pleasant. Sure, LeBron James will likely factor into the NBA MVP odds discussion, but Anthony Davis can’t stay on the court, and they can’t seem to find anyone to take Russell Westbrook off their hands.

They added a ton of bodies in free agency but none of them move the needle. Perhaps if they were able to acquire Kyrie Irving, they could be considered a top contender, but they’re an easy fade at the moment.

Target Phoenix vs Memphis Matchup

The Suns versus Grizzlies matchup was the one we were supposed to see last year in the Western Conference Final. They finished 1-2 respectively in the West, but both fell in hard fought second round series.

Phoenix should be considered 1 or 1A Golden State in the West, while the Grizzlies are a team on the rise. Memphis proved that the Warriors are not invincible and given this potential matchup pays out a cool 22-1, it’s by far my favorite target in this futures market.
