The Hurricanes and Panthers square off in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final tonight. Florida has taken a commanding 2-0 series lead in the NHL playoff bracket, and can put the Canes on the brink of elimination with another victory on home ice.

The task just got a whole lot more challenging this morning though, as star forward Sam Reinhart has been ruled out of Game 3. No Reinhart means more offensive opportunity for the Florida forwards, and I’m looking to capitalize on an increased role for Carter Verhaeghe in my Hurricanes vs Panthers same-game parlay picks.

I’m targeting 3+ shots for Verhaeghe as the first leg of my three-leg SGP. The second leg is the Hurricanes on the moneyline, as the underlying numbers suggest they’re due for some positive regression. I’ll round out the parlay with 1+ points for Sebastian Aho, who’s been by far Carolina’s most active forward. Add it all up, and it’s a +440 payday if everything hits.

Hurricanes vs Panthers Same-Game Parlay Pick #1: Carter Verhaeghe 3+ Shots

Reinhart led the Panthers in goals and points during the regular season, and was third in shots. No Florida player registered more shots on goal than Verhaeghe in the regular season, and he’s been one of the Panthers most productive players though two games versus the Hurricanes.

Verhaeghe has generated 10 shot attempts and 6 scoring chances, second to only Sam Bennett. 5 of those 6 scoring chances have been in the high danger zone, but only three of the attempts have been on goal. I expect more pucks to get through for Verhaeghe tonight, and for him to take on a bigger shooting role on the powerplay with Reinhart injured.

CAR vs FLA SGP Pick #2: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline

With Reinhart out, Florida’s offensive ceiling is diminished. However, that’s not why I like Carolina to bounce back tonight. Through two games, the advanced stats favor the Hurricanes across the board.

Carolina has controlled possession at a 57.46% clip across all strengths, and have produced more expected goals. They’ve dominated shot attempts and scoring chances, recording 15 more than the Panthers.

The difference has been between the pipes. Sergei Bobrovsky has outplayed Frederik Andersen badly, specifically when it comes to high danger chances. Bobrovsky has stopped 91% of the high-danger shots he’s faced, while Andersen has stopped only 75% of the ones coming his way.

Expect water to find its level and for those numbers to even out. Florida can’t keep getting away with surrendering these types of chances, and I’m betting it catches up to them tonight.

Hurricanes vs Panthers Same-Game Parlay Pick #3: Sebastian Aho 1+ Points

If the Canes are going to get back into this series and remain a Stanley Cup odds contender, they’ll need production from their best players. No player is more important to this team than Aho, who leads Carolina in scoring this postseason.

Aho was held pointless in Game 2 for only the fifth time all postseason. He leads all Hurricanes forwards in ice-time, shot attempts and scoring chances, registering a team-high 7 shots on goal through two games. The 27-year-old has 81 career playoff points in 86 postseason games, and I bet he’ll find his way onto the scoresheet again tonight.
