- No. 4 seed Rublev will meet qualifier Fucsovics in the Rotterdam final, Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EST
- Rublev was 5-0 in tournament finals during the 2020 season; this is his first final of 2021
- Fucsovics is a big underdog. We break down where he might still have some value.
The only other qualifier to ever reach the Rotterdam singles final was France’s Nicolas Escudé back in 2001.
And he won the title.
Marton Fucsovics, a 29-year-old Hungarian ranked No. 59, will try to do the same on Sunday.

Rublev was among the pre-tournament favorites at +500; Fucsovics was a mere blip on the chart.
By making the final, Fucsovics already is assured of moving back into the top 50. If he takes the title, he would clock in around No. 37.
Rublev began the week at No. 8. He will remain there no matter what.

Similar Time on Court and Match Statistics
Fucsovics played two qualifying matches over the weekend, both straight-sets victories. And Rublev played a pair of doubles matches during the week.
So that about evens out.
In their four main-draw matches, the two spent about the same amount of time on court.
Both dropped just one set, and both had one marathon match.
Fucsovics won in three tiebreaks against American Reilly Opelka in the first round. And Rublev survived Jérémy Chardy of France, 6-4 in the third set, in the quarterfinals.
Marton Fucsovics vs Andrey Rublev: Tournament Comparisons
Player | Total Aces/DFs | Avg. Match Time | Total Sets W/L | 1st/2nd Serve pts % Won | Avg. Opponent Ranking |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Marton Fucsovics | 18/8 | 1h53 | 8/1 | 64.8% / 60.0% | 43 |
Andrey Rublev | 29/6 | 1h47 | 8/1 | 77.4% / 53.5% | 69 |
On average, Fucsovics played higher-ranked players this week. But his highest-ranked opponent was No. 38 Opelka. Rublev is a different level.
Rublev faced a quality No. 123 in former No. 1 Andy Murray. And he beat No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals – the highest-ranked opponent either faced.
Fucsovics Impressive vs Coric
Borna Coric’s run in Rotterdam and his 3-0 head-to-head against Fucsovics made the Hungarian’s routine 6-4, 6-1 semifinal win all the more surprising.
He was the underdog in that match, but not nearly as big an underdog as he is in the final.

He was solid, but Coric did not bring his best. Not even close.
Rublev’s First Final of 2021
Rublev’s looking for his eighth career title in 10 finals, and his first of 2021.
Unless you count his win over Fabio Fognini in the ATP Cup final, a team event won by Russia.
In 2020, he won five titles. The last two came on indoor hard courts.
Fucsovics has one title in two lower-level finals. This is the biggest moment of his career.
Marton Fucsovics vs Andrey Rublev Match History
Tournament | Surface | Round | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2020 French Open | Clay | R16 | 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (3) | Rublev |
2017 Davis Cup | Clay | Playoff | 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, 6-3 | Fucsovics |
2016 Barcelona | Clay | Q1 | 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-3 | Fucsovics |
Rotterdam Court Somewhat Comparable to Clay
All of the previous meetings between Fucsovics and Rublev have come on red clay. And while you wouldn’t think there was much to compare to with Rotterdam being on indoor hard, it hasn’t played as differently as you’d expect.
The court is slow and gritty. That gives Fucsovics more time to defend than he would have on a faster court. But Rublev can hit stone-cold forehand winners on any surface.
There Could be Tiebreaks
Both matches between the two on the ATP Tour have featured tiebreaks in the first set.
DraftKing has the odds of Rublev winning a first-set tiebreak at +650, and of Fucsovics winning it at +1050. A long shot, but not out of the realm.
The odds of the two playing one or more tiebreaks are set at +175.
The game spreads are also something to look at, given the closeness of their previous encounters.
It’s hard to see Fucsovics pulling off the upset Rublev’s recent record in finals, and his firepower, are a double-whammy that likely will prove too much for the qualifier despite his good clay-court results against him when he was younger.
Best Bet: Rublev in two sets (-141)
