Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev was the top seed in Rotterdam this week. And he was the favorite to win it all.
No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev has an impressive indoor record, and was among the favorites.
But the two players to come out of their half of the draw are the unseeded Borna Coric and the qualifier Marton Fucsovics.
It is a huge opportunity for both to reach a big final, even if their opponent – whether it’s Stefanos Tsitsipas or Andrey Rublev – will be the heavy favorite.

Coric and Fucsovics Upset the Upsetters
Neither surprise semifinalist got there by pulling off a big upset over one of the tournament’s eight seeds.
They arrived in the final four the same way.
What they did was take advantage of those upsets.
Coric beat Dusan Lajovic (who upset No. 1 Medvedev) and Kei Nishikori (No. 7 Félix Auger-Aliassime).
Fucsovics defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (No. 5 Roberto Bautista Agut) and Tommy Paul (who beat Alexander Bublik, who had pulled off the upset over No. 3 Zverev)
Fucsovics looking for first 500-Level final
At 29, The Hungarian remains a better clay-court player than hard-court player.
(That’s also true of Coric, but the Croat’s winning percentages on all three surfaces are fairly close to each other).
But Fucsovics is that player who almost never beats himself. He’s not blessed with a huge serve or a lot of variety. But if a higher-ranked opponent falters or tires or isn’t on his favorite surface, he can be there to pick up the pieces.
Fucsovics did that at the 2020 French Open, eliminating Medvedev (not a clay lover) in the fourth round. It was Fucsovics’ first win over a top-10 player in 15 attempts.

At the Australian Open last month, he outlasted former champion Stan Wawrinka, 11-9 in the fifth-set tiebreak.
Wawrinka came in under trained after a bout with COVID-19 over the holidays. Fucsovics won the first two sets, Wawrinka the next two. But the Swiss didn’t have enough gas remaining in the tank to pull off the comeback.

Coric, though younger than Medvedev and barely older than Zverev or Rublev, peaked at No. 12 very early on in his career and has spent the last few years trying to live up to that.
Coric leads the Head-to-Head
Both have been around while; Coric was 16 when he turned pro in 2013. But the two met for the first time only two years ago.
Coric is 3-0, including a retirement. All the matches were on hard courts.
He has only lost one set against Fucsovics in his career. And he hasn’t dropped a set in three matches in Rotterdam so far.
So it’s surprising the odds are as close as they are.

Coric looking for Seventh Tour Final
The Croat has a 500-level title, on grass in Halle in 2018. He also reached the final of the Masters 1000 in Shanghai in 2018.
Fucsovics’ only career title came at a lower-level clay tournament Geneva in 2018, the week right before the French Open.
He is bidding to become only the second qualifier ever to reach the Rotterdam final, which typically has outstanding fields for a 500 event. The only other player to do it, Nicolas Escudé of France, won the tournament in 2001.
Fucsovics the Big Underdog
Fucsovics has surprised before. And Coric is a player who can, and does, lose to players below him in the rankings.
But despite the odds, it would be surprising to see the Hungarian pull off the victory. It would also be surprising to see him win a set.
So the +270 odds for the match going under 19.5 games (which projects out to a 6-3, 6-3 or a 6-3, 6-4 win) are tempting.
