Sun vs Fever Picks

  • Sun vs Fever pick: Fever -17.5 (-108)

Caitlin Clark had a phenomenal return from injury Saturday, putting up a team-high 32 points, scoring 25 in the first half, adding nine assists and eight rebounds. The team went 2-and-3 in her absence, but her return obviously boosts the Fever in a major way.

Indiana’s 5-5 record has featured a pair of blowout victories (by 35 and 27 points, both against Chicago), but also there’s been three tight, one possession excruciating losses. The Fever have actually struggled mightily against the Sun, dropping 14 of 15, including the 2-game series sweep in the playoffs last year. In the Clark era, it’s defeats in six of seven, with the latest one 85-83 May 30th, when the star guard was out.

Connecticut had a truly brutal start to the campaign, losing five in a row by an average of 16.4 points. They’ve since recovered a little bit, with two victories in five contests, though they still dropped two duels by 48 and 37 points, respectively.

It’s been a rough go for the Sun, after making at least the semis six straight seasons. They’ve undergone a full-scale rebuild, replacing all five starters from last year. No team has undergone such a dramatic facelift. Marina Mabrey and Tina Charles are the veteran presence on-hand, and they’re pacing the squad in points (17.6 and 16.8 PPG).

Indiana has several key contributors, with five players averaging double-digit points, including Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. With their ability to crush opponents and the Sun in rebuild mode, though it’s tough to stomach a 17.5 point spread, the Fever will attack the Sun relentlessly and cover.

As for the WNBA player props, I have my sights set on Caitlin Clark and her assist total. If the game goes as I suspect, there could be a great scenario in which she isn’t relied upon the whole time, allowing her to ease her way into the lineup. I’m taking the under on her 9.5 assist line.

While she’s gone over that mark in three of five outings (ten assists twice, eleven assists once), on the campaign, she was under that total in her last six outings last season. That includes under all six meetings against the Sun in 2023-24.

Should Indiana go up big early, Clark might not even see the floor in the fourth quarter, so with a bit of trepidation I’m going under 9.5 assists.

  • Sun vs Fever player prop bet: Caitlin Clark under 9.5 assists (-115)
