The New York Jets are a great watch during the preseason because they never know what to do with the quarterback position. Their first game is this Friday at 7:30 PM ET against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Mark Sanchez was named the starter for the Jets in the preseason, but all can change if Geno Smith plays at a decent level.

“You have to ask the coaches, but I feel like I’m putting together a good camp,” Sanchez said Wednesday. “I think I earned the right to start this first game, and we’ll see how it goes from there. But got to keep playing well to stay on the field, and that’s the plan.”

Geno knows he can win the job like Russell Wilson did last year if he plays out of his mind.

“The reps have been split,” the second-round draft choice Geno Smith said. “That’s kind of the way practices have been going. My job is just to take care of my reps that come on Friday. I don’t have any reaction towards (Sanchez starting); the competition is still open. I’m just continuing to work and to grow.”

Mathew Stafford will be limited for the Lions on Friday.  There’s no quarterback competition at Detroit.

“I just want to execute,” the fifth-year quarterback said after Thursday’s practice. “Play fast out there, limit our mental errors on offense, make sure we’re going to the right spots. Physical errors are going to happen, but make sure we’re sound and crisp.”

Jim Schwartz has a 12-4 record during the preseason, and Rex Ryan is 6-10.  The Lions are 3.5 favorites for the game on Friday.
