The Philadelphia Eagles announced this Tuesday that Michael Vick will be the starting quarterback of the 2013 season. The Eagles will face the Jaguars this Saturday at 7 PM ET at the EverBank Field in the third game of this preseason.
Coach Chip Kelly saw in Vick what he didn’t see in Nick Foles or Matt Barkley.
“I think I proved I could be consistent every day and be a leader on this team,” Vick said. “I’m going to take the same approach, the same mindset. I know how hard I worked over the last four months. It would be a shame if I let up. It would be selfish, to myself and my teammates.”
The Eagles are 3 point favorites for the game against the Jaguars, where Vick will see most of the snaps. However, they are four point underdogs when playing against the Redskins in week one of the regular season.
“We’ve evaluated the situation, and Michael Vick is going to start for us against the Washington Redskins,” Kelly said. “He’ll get the predominant amount of reps today in practice, and he’ll play, hopefully, our plan is for him to play two quarters in Jacksonville.”
“Mike and I had a great battle,” Foles, who lost the starting job, said. “Nothing is going to change between me and Mike. We’re going to continue to push each other.”
The Jaguars already named Blaine Gabbert as their starter for week one, but he won’t see any snaps for the rest of the preseason due to a small injury on his throwing hand.
