As it stands, the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks will meet in the first round of the playoffs. For now, attention is on their seeding game on August 6th. Dallas’ aim in these games has been to pull out of the seventh seed and avoid the Clips. The Clips were expected to consolidate their spot as the two seed, but they are under pressure from Denver and could slip to three.

Los Angeles is still without Patrick Beverley and Montrezl Harrell for this game – Beverley is dealing with a calf injury and Harrell is out of the bubble due to the death of his grandmother.

The latest Los Angeles Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks odds favor the Clips to improve their bubble record to 2-2 – as can be seen in the table below.

Majestic Luka

The Mavs are an historically good offensive team. Their offensive rating is the best in the league. Only the Rockets shoot more threes per contest. It all goes through Luka Doncic, a fringe MVP candidate, who comes into this game off a majestic performance against the Sacramento Kings. Doncic’s entire season has been spectacular, but his 34-20-12 in the win over the Kings is up there as one of the best performances in the NBA.

The shooting of the players around him is crucial. Seth Curry is day-to-day, but in Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway, Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber and Trey Burke, Rick Carlisle can put out lineups with Doncic plus four shooters.

He is an elite passer with court vision rivalled by few in the league. Surrounded with shooters, teams are limited in how they can defend Doncic.

The Clippers are as well equipped as anyone to guard Doncic one-on-one. Marcus Morris, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard have the size to matchup with the Slovenian. While losing Beverley weakens their overall defense, he would not have been a primary option on Doncic because of the height mismatch.

Up and Down Clips

For a team with their record, it seems misplaced to call the Clippers inconsistent. Load management, injuries and so-so performances have seen them fluctuate from superb to indifferent this season. That pattern has continued in the bubble – they blew out the Pelicans before a loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Their peak remains as high as any team in the league, but they have often underwhelmed. The defensive effort has not always been there. Perhaps the pressure being applied by the Nuggets will spur them on for a big performance against Dallas.

With key rotation players going in and out, chemistry remains a concern. They have not been able to rack up the minutes with important line-ups as they may have liked.

Dallas Keep It Close

The Mavericks’ win over the Kings was a big moment in their bubble experience. Moving to 1-2, rather than 0-3, ahead of this game was important. It’s a big ask, but Carlisle will still believe they can move out of seventh.

Neither a blowout win nor disappointing loss would be surprising from the Clippers. This looks a good matchup for them, with Dallas attacking from the perimeter rather than challenging their interior defense. Perhaps that works in the Clips’ favor, perhaps this becomes an offensive shootout.

Dallas will take confidence from their win over the Kings. Doncic was on top of his game. The spread looks kind to the Clippers – the Mavs are a good bet at +4.

Pick: Dallas Mavericks +4 (-110)
