  • The Toronto Blue Jays are -120 favorites to beat the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon
  • The Orioles are +104 underdogs. Baltimore is 5-5 against the spread as a home underdog this season
  • The total for the game is 10. Four of Toronto’s last six games have exceeded that number

The Baltimore Orioles look to be coming back down to earth, while the Toronto Blue Jays are still trying to figure out where they fit into the MLB orbit.

These two old American League rivals meet in a Wednesday afternoon matinee (1:05 pm ET, Aug. 19) at Camden Yards. The visitors are slight favorites.

Toronto is -120 chalk with Tanner Roark (1-1) taking the mound. This marks the third straight game that the Blue Jays are road favorites in the Blue Jays vs Orioles odds.

Toronto Blue Jays -120 -1.5 (+135) O 10.0 (-107)
Baltimore Orioles +104 +1.5 (-159) U 10.0 (-114)

Odds as of Aug. 18.

The Orioles counter with Tommy Milone (1-2). After Tuesday’s 8-7 extra-innings loss, Baltimore is 1-4 on its current homestand since returning from a perfect 6-0 road trip. In fact, the Orioles are 1-8 in their last eight home contests.

What Are the Orioles Wearing?

It sounds more like a question you’d hear on the fashion runways of Milan or Paris. However, it’s a valid question to be asked in the Baltimore clubhouse.

There’s definitely a fashion trend where betting on the Orioles is concerned. According to research compiled by Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net, when the Orioles don their home whites, they might as well be waving the flag of surrender.

Baltimore is 1-8 in those uniforms. The Orioles were wearing them in Monday’s 7-2 loss to Toronto and again in Tuesday’s setback. They’ve gone 11-3 in any other garb.

The Birds are 4-0 in their road greys. They’re 2-0 in their black road alternate jerseys with grey pants, and in their orange road alternates with white pants.

Inconsistency a Blue Jays Trademark

Orange is the color that puts the Blue Jays in the black. The Jays could be sweeping their first series of the season in Baltimore.

Toronto was 0-4-2 in series this season when the team arrived in Baltimore. The Jays managed to split a two-game set with the Miami Marlins and a four-game series facing the defending World Series champion Washington Nationals.

There’s just something about Baltimore that brings out the best in Toronto. The Jays are 25-13 in their last 38 games against the Orioles, and have already won the three-game series with Baltimore thanks to Monday’s and Tuesday’s victories.  A win Wednesday  would give them a confidence-boosting sweep.

Tanner Getting Tanned

It would be wrong to suggest that opposition hitters are giving the baseball a steady hiding when Tanner Roark is on the mound for Toronto. He’s only surrendered seven hits in seven innings over his last two starts.

Then again, hitters don’t need to be swinging away. Roark is issuing a steady supply of free passes.

Orioles Career Stats vs Roark

Hanser Alberto 0 0 0 .000
Chris Davis 5 0 0 .200

Dwight Smith 0 0 0 .000
Ramon Urias 0 0 0 .000
Pat Valaika 0 0 0 .000
Andrew Velazquez 0 0 3 .000

He’s walked nine batters over those same seven innings. At the same time, Roark has struck out just five.

Roark has an ERA of 6.00 for the season, which rises up to 9.00 through his last two trips to the bump. The right-hander is 0-3 lifetime with a 6.88 ERA in three career starts against Baltimore.

Past Milone

Since 2017, Milone is 6-17 in the majors. Yet he probably deserves a better fate than his current 1-2 reccord.

Milone was hit hard in his first start, coughing up four runs in three innings. In his three starts since, he’s fashioned a 2.40 ERA.

Blue Jays Career Stats vs Milone

Player AB HR RBI AVG
Anthony Alford 0 0 0 .000
Cavan Biggio 0 0 0 .000

Reese McGuire 0 0 0 .000
Joe Panik 3 0 0 .000
Travis Shaw 3 1 3 .333
Rowdy Tellez 0 0 0 .000

He hasn’t walked a batter over his last 15 innings. In that same time frame, he’s struck out 13 and served up a solitary home run.

This will be the first start for the lefty against Toronto since July 4, 2014. He’s 0-2 lifetime when facing the Blue Jays with a 5.21 ERA, but the 2020 Jays bear little resemblance to the 2014 team powered by Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion.

Pick: Baltimore Orioles (+104), over 10 (-107)
