Perhaps the most interesting game of the Friday International friendlies has Portugal taking on Mexico at the Gillete Stadium in Boston, at 8:30 PM ET, in the last game for both countries before their World Cup debut.
Mexico has beaten Israel and Ecuador, but never looked comfortable on the pitch; they also lost against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Mexicans open the World Cup against Cameroon on June 13.
“As I have told you, I’m trying to start a large percentage of the base of my team in this game against Cameroon, but it also depends on their performance [Friday],” coach Miguel Herrera said. “I hope they do well because I think they have done the best in this competition. Even though it is very even, these are the players who are sticking out.”
Portugal played against Greece and drew 0-0; they start the World Cup against Germany on June 16 in a group that also has Ghana and team USA.
“We know we have an important match against Germany, the first one in the competition, then against Ghana, and finally against the United States. Our goal is obviously to pass the group stage. Then we’ll see”, said Cristiano Ronaldo, who won’t play against Mexico due to an injury.
Portugal beat Mexico 2-1 in the Germany 2006 World Cup; that was the last time they met.
The soccer odds have Portugal listed +205; Mexico +143 and the draw at +195. The game total was set at two goals.
