Top Seed
The 25-year old Belgian has been able to hold her seeding over the course of her three matches that she’s played here in San Jose.
In her semifinal match, she managed to defeat Putintseva 6-3, 7(10)-6(8) in just under two hours. And with that win, she took a lead in their head-to-head meetings, now leading 2-1. Mertens managed to win 74 percent of her first-serve points, which may have been the difference in the game.

The Belgian got off to a strong start leading 4-0 in the first set, but allowed for her opponent to make a comeback when she was serving at 5-4 in the second set. The 6-3 first set was as straightforward as it sounds, but the second set caused some worry.
But Mertens managed to hold off her opponent and battle through the tiebreak to earn her spot in the semifinal of the tournament. This will now be her second appearance at the Silicon Valley Classic semifinal in three appearances at the tournament.
Fourth Seed
Russia’s Kasatkina was able to even the score on her head-to-head against Linette when she defeated the world ranked No. 45 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in just over two hours.
The 24-year old came out strong in the first set that allowed her to take it to go up, but the second set was a completely different story. With many chances, she just couldn’t managed to turn much into a point. Linette continued the momentum when she went up 3-1 in the decider. It was then that Kasatkina was able to comeback to level it out at 3-3 and never looked back.
Another big comeback!
Daria Kasatkina survives a thriller against an inspired Magda Linette, coming from 0-2 0-30 down in the decider to triumph 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and book her spot in the @MubadalaSVC semifinals!

She’ll now look ahead to Mertens, who she does hold a winning record against. But Mertens will take advantage of any mistakes, so if Kasatkina would like to book her ticket to the final, she’ll have to tighten up her unforced errors.
Head-to-Head
We have three previous matches to go off of between these two players. Their most recent match comes back in 2019 at the Stuttgart Open where Kasatkina won the round of 32 match in straight sets. Kasatkina currently holds the head-to-head edge with a 2-1 record.

Best Bet
This has all the makings for an exciting semifinal match between these two players.
Despite a little hiccup in her first round match where she dropped her second set against Kristina Mladenovic, she’s been playing a solid tournament, and been able to hold up her seeding. Heading into this match against Kasatkina, she’ll have to clean up her double faults and unforced errors, if she wants to make it easier on herself. In her two previous matches, she’s recorded a total of 16 double faults.
Kasatkina has seen both of her previous matches go the distance. She had to come back from behind in her first match of the tournament against Caroline Garcia, after losing the first set. Overall, she’s played a pretty decent tournament, she’s just had moments where her play has fallen off. If she’s able to sort that out in some way, she could really give Mertens a run.
Right now, as the top seed and favorite, Mertens has the slight edge, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Kasatkina were to take a set off her.
Best Bet: Mertens (-175)
