United Respond to Liverpool Defeat
United responded to the Liverpool disaster in the best possible way with an emphatic 3-0 away win in London against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend; a win that may well have saved the job of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. As it transpired, it was, instead, a game that signaled the end of Nuno Espirito Santo’s time at the helm at Tottenham.

Despite playing under enormous pressure as a result of the 5-0 defeat by Liverpool, United won in north London with considerable ease thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford, and in midweek were able to earn a point in Atalanta in tricky circumstances to take themselves another step closer to qualification to the knockout phase of the Champions League.
Close Call in Atalanta
It was a tight one in Atalanta though and, not for the first time, they had to rely on some Ronaldo heroics to get them out of a potential hole. Twice United fell behind and twice the Portuguese superstar equalized for United; the first in first-half injury-time and second a minute into injury-time at the end of the game. As a result, they stayed top of Group F with two to play.

The City game will, however, be a huge test for Solskjaer’s men off the back of some horrible home form – one point earned from their last three games at Old Trafford – but they do have some good recent form against Guardiola’s men to fall back on after being unbeaten in their last four EPL meetings with their city rivals.

City Surprised By Palace
City is currently in third in the EPL but has slipped to five points behind the leaders Chelsea after a shock home defeat by Crystal Palace last weekend. On a difficult afternoon at the Etihad, City was reduced to ten men on the stroke of half-time when Aymeric Laporte was shown red for a professional foul on Wilfried Zaha but was already 1-0 after the same player scored for the Eagles early on. The points were sealed on 88-minutes when Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher wrapped up the points and a 2-0 win.
Guardiola’s men responded well in midweek though with a thumping 4-1 over Club Brugge in the Champions League; a win that took them to the top of Group A ahead of PSG. Goals for Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez gave them an easy win and quickly dispelled the negative air that hung over the Etihad after the Palace defeat.

Fine Away Form for City
The defeat by Palace ended an impressive eight-game unbeaten run in the league for City but more significant was the aforementioned five-point gap it opened up between them and leaders Chelsea. The Citizens will however show no fear of going to Old Trafford as their away form has been good – 10 points from their last four away league games.
As a result, it will be a confident City that makes the short trip to Old Trafford and Guardiola will be reminding his players that an early goal for them could make for a very uneasy atmosphere inside the stadium for the United players.

Manchester United vs Manchester City Prediction
United will be grateful that the win against Tottenham steadied the ship but know they were a little fortunate to have earned that point in Atalanta. There are still bridges to be built after the Liverpool disaster and an early goal here for Man City could lead to a toxic atmosphere.
Guardiola will be demanding a high-tempo start from his players and if they can get that early goal it could be a very tricky one for United, given their recent vulnerabilities in defense.
Pick: Manchester City to win (-145) / Gabriel Jesus to score first goal (+500)
