Islanders Lose Home Opener
New York’s losing streak has reached five games after losing 5-2 to Calgary at UBS Arena in their home opener Saturday. The Islanders finally played their first game in their new arena after beginning the season on a 13-game road trip.
The Isles outshot the Flames 36-31 despite being without several key players.

New York was one of the league’s best home teams in 2020-21, but they’ve struggled out of the gate this season. The Isles are scoring the third-fewest amount of goals in the league (2.23), while owning the second-worst power play (12.5%).
New York has been held to two or fewer goals in nine straight games.
One reason the Isles are struggling is because the team has been decimated by COVID-19. New York’s COVID protocol list continues to grow, as Adam Pelech, Andy Greene, Anthony Beauvillier, Anders Lee, Josh Bailey and Ross Johnston were all unavailable Saturday. It’s unclear if any of these players will return Sunday.
Leafs Also Looking to Bounce Back
Toronto is also looking for a rebound performance Sunday after losing 2-0 to Pittsburgh at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday. The Maple Leafs were outshot 31-26 by the Penguins and got shutout by Pens goalie Tristan Jarry. The loss snapped an impressive five-game winning streak for Toronto.

Despite the loss, Toronto has been a far superior team to New York this season. The Maple Leafs rank fourth in the NHL in goals against (2.39), while featuring a top-10 power play (26.5%) and penalty kill (87.8%).
Toronto is only scoring 2.67 goals per game, but they’re averaging the seventh-highest number of shots.
The Maple Leafs are led by their talented offensive core of William Nylander, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares, who are all averaging around a point per game. The team’s biggest standout may be goalie Jack Campbell, who owns a 10-4-2 record with a .944 save percentage.
Leafs vs Islanders Pick
It tells you plenty about the state of the Islanders that they’re underdogs in their electric new building in Sunday’s NHL odds. New York only lost seven times at home all of last season, but their lack of goal-scoring and COVID concerns have oddsmakers skeptical.
New York has had success against Toronto recently, however, winning three of the past five meetings.

This is a back-to-back situation, so goaltending is key to betting the matchup. Campbell played for Toronto Saturday, so it’ll be 23-year-old Joseph Woll (.852 SV%) making his second career start against the Isles.
Semyon Varlamov played for the Isles Saturday, so it’ll be Ilya Sorokin (.925 SV%) facing the Maple Leafs.

New York looked impressive in their home opener Saturday and hold a big goaltending advantage vs Toronto. Sorokin is far more experienced than Woll, and the Isles still have their top two scorers healthy in Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal. Take advantage of NYI being home underdogs and bet them on the moneyline vs Toronto.
